Today, during the presentation of the Secretariat Report of our great party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), at the 8th National Convention which held in Abuja, I reiterated that the party is the only hope for the Nigerian masses. The ruling party never had a vision; its Renewed Hope agenda was a scam! We are here because the ADC is on a rescue mission to pry the country from the strangulating grasp of the ruling party. The APC is a party which has foisted on the country an electoral law that states that forgery and making false claims in electoral documents is no longer a punishable electoral offence. In other words, the ruling party is decriminalizing criminality. We proclaim our existence because our country is worth all necessary sacrifices. We cannot allow kakistocracy in Nigeria. The government’s claim that the recent reduction in the exchange rate shows its mastery of economics is false. In truth, the exchange rate, which was about N700 to the dollar when this government assumed office in 2023, is now about N1,400. This amounts to a 100 percent devaluation. In an import-dependent economy, this is devastating. Before this administration, the cost of a litre of fuel was between N185 and N238, depending on which part of the country you were in; now it is about N1,400 per litre and still rising. The cost of transportation is now so prohibitive that it has become unrealistic for some workers to go to work. The administration told Nigerians that if it does not solve the power problem by providing a constant power supply, it should not be voted for a second term. Today, power supply is far worse, with some parts of the country receiving an average of two hours daily and some being in darkness for weeks and months at a stretch. Ordinarily, having made such a promise and failed woefully, an honest president should simply step down and not seek reelection. Rather, what we are witnessing is the most desperate attempt by a candidate in Nigerian electoral history to retain power at all costs, even if it means bringing down the entire democratic system.

I am happy that some of us have emerged from the ashes of the ruins of APC and PDP to chart a new and different coarse for the nation. It is a long journey, however, we have taken the first step in the right direction. As we can see, APC is demonstrating the Samson Complex by trying to pull down the nation on its head as its last act of political savagery. Nigeria is bleeding and the people are groaning. But the APC government is feasting. The question on everyone’s lips is whether Nigeria will survive the four years of this administration.

I thank the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, and the entire people of Osogbo for welcoming us to the grand finale of our federal constituency tour to energise the people and introduce the ADC to them. In two days, it will be fifteen years since we came to Osogbo to assume the reins of government, and to this day, even after we left seven years ago, the people have never stopped appreciating the work we did and the impact it had on their lives. When the ADC returns to power, we will do even more. Do not forget that when we left office, Osun had the LOWEST CRIME RATE, the 2nd LOWEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, and the LOWEST POVERTY RATE in the country. This was made possible by our vision of a people-friendly government, the cooperation and sacrifices of our workers, and the hard work of our people, who remained productive because government was not politicised. Today, local government administration has ground to a halt due to the destructive politicking of the governments in power. When the wicked rule, the people suffer. We, however, have the fear of God, and we will restore a God-fearing government that puts the people first. ADC, Arise and Shine!

Today, I had the privilege of attending the affirmation ceremony, where like-minded stakeholders from the PDP, Labour Party, and other Lagosians proclaimed their membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State. Below is an excerpt from my speech at the event: On 15 December 1983, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, of blessed memory, addressed the Sixth Annual Congress of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). This was in the aftermath of the deeply flawed and farcical election of August 1983, which returned Shehu Shagari as president for a second term. In his memorable speech, he said, inter alia: “Binary compounds of thesis and antithesis, which may be evolutionary or revolutionary, in which—whether we like it or not—all human beings are inescapably involved… When the war is over, only the best of us will be accommodated in the synthesis, with the best in antithesis in complete dominance.” Embedded in this profound statement, and drawing from the Hegelian notion of dialectics, is the unavoidable truth that the existing political order, which is the thesis, will be confronted by its antithesis, bringing it to an end. A new order will therefore emerge as the synthesis. Across the nation, the spectre of insecurity looms large as sundry criminals lay siege on the people, making economic and social activities nearly impossible. People now live in mortal fear for their lives and property. Medical services, and especially drugs, have become so exorbitant that many of the sick are left waiting to die—unless a miracle comes their way. The cost of living is so high that starvation is literally stalking the land. Those who are a little more comfortable are being overwhelmed by requests for assistance from the needy in our society. We must learn from the lessons of history and not take them for granted. The people are at the centre of politics and government. Any government—whether democratic, military, authoritarian, monarchical, or whatever its definition—that does not make the welfare and wellbeing of its people the basis of governance will soon lose relevance and collapse. There is a limit to how much the people can be squeezed and pushed before something eventually gives. This is why our mission is urgent and our intervention has become absolutely necessary. We must act now to save the nation. A political party exists to serve as the vehicle that gives the people access to political power. This is a sacred mission, and whenever any ruling party departs from it, the consequences are dire. More than anything, I have been encouraged by the enthusiasm of politicians and citizens across divides and from all walks of life who are trooping into the ADC.
