The plan to deport Pashtun citizens from Switzerland based on ethnicity is not only a clear violation of human rights and refugee protection principles, but also reflects a dangerous and deeply flawed understanding of Afghanistan’s social and political structure. Like all other honorable ethnic groups in Afghanistan, Pashtuns have been among the primary victims of the past decades of war. The Taliban do not represent any particular ethnicity, nor do they speak for the legitimate will of the people. They are an armed extremist group that has imposed its demands on the Afghan nation through the instrumental use of religious ideology. In recent years, thousands of Pashtun families have lost their homes and loved ones, or have been forced into exile—either because of their resistance against the Taliban or because they were caught in the crossfire of conflict. Portraying the Taliban as representatives of an ethnic group is a blatant distortion of reality and a grave injustice to the millions of peace-loving and victimized Pashtun citizens. The international community—particularly countries that claim to champion human rights, such as Switzerland—must recognize the difference between an extremist group and a noble ethnic community in their immigration policies and political-judicial decisions. They must not allow historical and political injustices to be repeated in the form of administrative and legal actions. #Being_Pashtun_is_not_a_crime
