Calvinists misrepresent the Provisionist view, claiming that if man must accept Christ, saving faith is a “work” and therefore man is in part responsible for his own salvation. No. Faith is not the price paid for salvation. It is the empty hand that receives what Christ has already purchased. Agency means recognizing that an adult is capable of making choices and therefore can be held responsible for those choices. Mental illness may affect thinking and behavior, but a diagnosis alone does not automatically erase agency or criminal responsibility. Treating women as equal moral agents means resisting the paternalistic assumption that women’s actions should routinely be attributed to hormones, mental health, circumstances, or other diagnoses in ways we wouldn’t accept for men.
