"I think it could only be in Britain that a Prime Minister was accused of sinking an enemy ship that was a danger to our navy when my main motive was to protect the boys in our navy." –Margaret Thatcher to Diana Gould questioning the sinking of the Belgrano, one of the key turning points in the Falklands War, in 1983

Over 11 years, Labour closed 300 pits. Over 9 years, the Conservative Government have closed 92 pits, so there is no difference between us that certain pits have to be closed down. The choice we have to make is: Do you subsidise the older pits which are not as good, not as healthy, not as good to work in, or do you in fact put your money into investing in the new pits, much healthier for miners, much better equipped, with a future? We have taken the view, and I think it was the view taken by previous Labour governments, that the thing to do is invest in the future. Indeed, as I have indicated on the pit closures, we have not followed a different path from Labour. We have put more money in investment. And that, I hope, is in earnest of our confidence in the future of the coal pits and coal mining industry in this country. If you have a choice to subsidise older pits, not as healthy, not as safe—and many of us wouldn't wish miners to work in those conditions—or to put money into the future, which, if you're really concerned, do you take? Because don't forget, it's taxpayers' money.

"The new President of Argentina has asked for new peace talks with Britain. Do you say that sovereignty is still not negotiable?" "Sovereignty is not negotiable. You simply cannot lay claim to someone else's territory and then claim there is a dispute and other people have to talk with you, whether you are a dictatorship or a democracy. But when you have become a democracy, that means the government in power has been put in power by the wishes of the people. You would expect such a government to respect the wishes of other people."

The 'Falkland Islands' was the first case [postwar] where any country decided that an aggressor should not succeed. It was the first case of upholding international law. And if I might gently remind you, it's probably because of that Argentina has democracy today.

Once you compress incentives from the top-down and say, "It doesn't matter how much you earn I'm going to take the lion's share away," they say, "Alright, I'm no longer going to do the lion's part." Then they stop creating the extra wealth which would benefit both themselves and society as a whole.

On 28th November 1990, Margaret Thatcher formally tenders her resignation to the Queen. "We're leaving Downing Street for the last time after eleven and a half wonderful years, and we're very happy that we leave the United Kingdom in a very much better state than when we came here."

Government has no money. We don't take anything called 'government money' in. We only take money from ordinary men and women in to be spent by government. If we take in more to spend, it means they don't have it to spend, so the amount of demand is the same in the economy. But let's just try to see for a moment where jobs come from: Jobs come from business. Business comes from pleasing the customer. This is why we have put so much emphasis on small business. In the end, we rely on the wealth-creating sector, the private sector, to create the jobs and create the business from which we pay the tax to keep the public services going.

My very first audience as Prime Minister with Her Majesty the Queen set the tone for all those that followed for the next eleven and a half years. But anyone who believes that such meetings are a mere formality would be greatly mistaken. The Queen takes an intense interest in every aspect of life in our country, and she brings to bear a formidable grasp of current issues, and a tremendous breadth of experience. Her guidance and advice are always most acute and as Prime Minister I was privileged to benefit from both enormously. Don't forget she has been Queen longer than any of us were ever Prime Minister. She is truly an inspiration and an example to the whole nation. Long may she rule.

We've been ruled by men who live by illusions: —The illusion that you can spend money you haven't earned without eventually going bankrupt or falling into the hands of your creditors; —The illusion that real jobs can be conjured into existence by government decree like rabbits out of a hat; —The illusion that there is some other way of creating wealth than by hard work and satisfying your customers; —The illusion that you can have freedom and enterprise without believing in free enterprise.

Margaret Thatcher famously considered 'Yes, Minister' to be her favourite television programme, and remarked that it was somewhat true to life. As a huge fan, Thatcher took part in a special sketch for the show in 1984 at the National Viewers and Listeners Association Awards. The sketch, which focused on her desire to abolish economists, was co-written by Thatcher and her press secretary, Bernard Ingham.

Freedom can also be lost little by little, by what the Fabians call the doctrine of gradualness. A little more taxation here, a little more government expenditure there, year after year until the people are no longer the masters of the state but its servants. There are always, it seems, good reasons advanced for the state to have more power. But rarely for the state to divest itself of power. Each new problem becomes an excuse for more government intervention and less individual responsibility.

Once you start to compromise with the Left, first you compromise with the near Left. Then they're fanatical, and you compromise with the middle Left. Then you find yourselves compromising with the far Left. Never forget that some of the tyrannical regimes have come into power by constitutional means.

The people who are going to buy council houses are those who would probably live in them for the rest of their lives anyway. It seems to me absolutely wrong to say to them you must go on paying increasing rent for the rest of your life and never have the chance to own your home. Give them a chance to own it. They'd have been there anyway. They'll do their own maintenance. They'll do their own improvements. The next generation will have gotten used to, "I'm going to be a homeowner." It will give them a new independence, and a new dignity.

Let us never forget this fundamental truth: The state has no source of money other than the money people earn themselves. If the state wishes to spend more, it can do so only by borrowing your savings or by taxing you more. And it is no good thinking that someone else will pay—that "someone else" is you. There is no such thing as public money, there is only taxpayers' money. Prosperity won't come by inventing more and more lavish public expenditure programs. You don't grow richer by ordering another chequebook from the bank. No nation ever grew more prosperous by taxing its citizens beyond their capacity to pay. We have a duty to make sure that every penny piece we raise in taxation is spent wisely and well.

When I took over in Britain the top rate of tax on earned income was 83%. The top rate of tax on investment income was 98% ... We had to take away many of the regulations: There were controls on prices, controls on incomes, controls on dividends, controls on foreign exchange—all of this and the top rate of tax went within the first 6 weeks.
