Shorts

I was chatting about this with a friend a few days ago because it rings true to me. As a teen and young adult, I always played it safe to avoid questions about my sexuality. I did, said, and reacted in ways that weren’t fully authentic to protect myself, even though, looking back, I didn’t fully need to. I was afraid to be open about liking boys, wearing certain things that might raise questions, or acting in ways some straight guys wouldn’t. Publicly, I come across as somewhat straight-coded, and ever since coming out earlier this year, I’ve started unpicking the parts of my life that are truly me from those that were just for show, so I can live authentically or as close to it as possible from now on. I’m not trying to become someone new. I’m just trying to stop being someone I’m not. And damn, it feels good to finally breathe.
