On the eve of the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, I honor the Chicago Young Lords and their protests of 1969 – the first marches for Puerto Rican self-determination in Chicago’s history. 57 years later, Puerto Rico is still a U.S. colony. This weekend, while America declares its commitment to “No Kings,” we must also demand “NO COLONIES.” When we support Puerto Rico’s right to self-determination, we support the right of sovereignty for people everywhere.

As a Member of the Homeland Security Committee, I came to the Broadview ICE Processing Center to fulfill my congressional oversight authority, granted under appropriation laws. Yet, this Administration continues to deny our requests for answers and bypass Congressional authority b/c they don't want us to see the cruelty behind these doors. It is ridiculous that Congress can't even get proper answers from the people in charge!

Block the Bombs is the first step toward real oversight and accountability for the consequences of a military campaign that has leveled Gaza, displaced millions, and killed a reported 54,000 Palestinians.
