Kristi Noem is in Portland today. She should see the real Portland—a city that’s peaceful and filled with people who care for one another. Instead of feeding Trump’s political theater, she needs to rein in the federal agents brutalizing peaceful protesters.

I just conducted unannounced oversight of the Northwest Detention Center, which serves my district, and what I witnessed was devastating. One woman, who has called this country home for 20 years, was detained just days before her wedding to a U.S. citizen. Another man, a legal permanent resident for 31 years, a proud member of the Machinists Union, and a father of three U.S. citizen children, is also being held in detention. Trump is detaining our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones without guaranteed due process and no accountability. That’s not American; that’s authoritarianism. I will not back down from this fight.

It is egregious and ironic that ICE is “fearful” of anti-ICE protesters while they are terrorizing our community members. I refuse to stand by. I will continue demanding accountability and justice for those who have been disappeared and hurt by this rogue institution. Abolish ICE. Stay loud.

I am grateful today a judge granted a restraining order to block the National Guard from being deployed in Portland. But Trump’s lawless provocation will continue. Our response is simple: stay calm and do not take the bait. I encourage everyone to continue exercising their right to peaceful protest, but for your safety, to do so away from the ICE building in SW Portland.

Important update! Judge Karin Immergut just issued a broader temporary restraining order that precludes any National Guard troops from being in Oregon for 14 days. We cannot rest. The President is abusing his power, attempting to militarize our cities. The power of the people must remain greater than the people in power.
