Two things can be true: 1. Laken Riley’s murder was a terrible tragedy. 2. Attempting to honor her memory by passing a bill that requires mandatory detention without criminal charges–and without access to a bond or bail hearing–is a blatant assault on American values. It violates the principles of due process, individual liberty, and the presumption of innocence that defines our nation. I will be voting no on H.R. 29.

Republicans just passed their hate-fueled Don't Say Trans bill that infringes on American students' First Amendment rights by censoring curricula and banning books, and could put children in harm's way by requiring schools to out trans students in certain situations, even if doing so would put them in physical danger. Whether Republicans choose to acknowledge this fact or not, transgender people exist and I will continue fighting for their rights and celebrating their identities.

This week, I offered an amendment to prohibit more taxpayer funds from being used to continue this inhumane abuse of power. Instead of standing up to Trump, House Republicans voted my amendment down.

The Penn Station renovation project will be a multi-billion dollar investment in our community, using New Yorkers' tax dollars, and the Trump administration has failed to provide any of the necessary details–no public hearings have been held, and no cost estimates have been shared. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the busiest transportation hub in the United States. But the Trump administration is grossly mishandling the process by conducting backroom negotiations without public oversight. I am honored today to lead New York elected officials and advocates demanding a transparent rebuilding process for Penn Station with strong public oversight.

Under @Sec_Noem’s leadership, DHS is an out of control agency where lies and deceit have become commonplace. ICE agents lied when they seized a Columbia University student without a warrant. They lied when they handcuffed a member of my staff. And they lied when they abandoned a blind refugee in the freezing cold. Secretary Noem refuses to make good on any sort of accountability or comply with local investigations into her agency’s conduct. Tomorrow, I will, once again, vote NO on DHS funding.
