To paint a door well, start by removing the hardware or taping it off, then clean and lightly sand the surface so the new paint sticks. Fill any dents or holes, wipe off the dust, and apply primer if you’re dealing with bare wood or a big color change. Use a brush for the edges and recessed panels, and a small foam roller for the flat sections to avoid brush marks. Apply two to three thin coats of semi-gloss or satin paint for durability and easy cleaning, letting each coat dry fully before the next. Keep the door slightly open while it dries so it doesn’t stick to the jamb, and wait about 24 hours before reinstalling hardware.
