Parts of the UNESCO-protected Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Ukraine's most revered Orthodox monastery, were set ablaze during a Russian missile and drone barrage. Afghan Talliban forces used gunfire to disperse a women’s rights protest in the western city of Herat on June 9 after residents demonstrated against the recent arrest of women accused of violating the Taliban's mandatory dress code. One eyewitness told RFE/RL’s Radio Azadi that at least one person was killed and several people were injured. Taliban authorities did not confirmed any casualties or arrests.

Iranian-born author Marjane Satrapi, who wrote the hit graphic novel Persepolis, was laid to rest on June 19 in Paris amid tributes honoring her work. Her graphic novel was later adapted into a Cannes-winning animated film. Known for her wit, provocative and irreverent storytelling, and outspoken positions on human rights, Satrapi was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery amid commemorations from international artists.

A Ukrainian drone strike targeted the Syzran oil refinery in Russia, located more than 800 kilometers from Ukraine. Samara regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported two deaths and injuries following the attack. Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces later confirmed the strike, saying the refinery supplies fuel to the Russian military.

Ukrainian forces stationed near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region say they've seen increasing attacks as Russia's spring offensive gets under way.
