My modest 16–30 ft buffer bill was deemed totally infeasible in corn-and-soy-ruled Illinois. Instead, here’s the Kaskaskia River, with crops planted to the edge of eroding banks. BTW, ag now wants to claim streambank erosion is a non-ag source of phosphorus pollution. Please.

Most people don't think of Illinois as a major coal state. But Southern Illinois has massive coal deposits and a long history w coal. The toxic legacy of coal mining is visible. This is the Will Scarlet coal mine site, sometimes also known as "Demon Waters," or "The Red Sea."
