USS Missouri (BB-63) firing her 16”/50 and 5”/38 guns during PacEx 89 off Okinawa on October 14, 1989. The rate of fire and “bark” of the 5”/38’s is quite apparent. At this period in her career her 5”/38 rate of fire was only 60% of what her WWII/Korean War rate was. Seen here, she only has 3 5”/38 mounts (6 guns) per side. 2 mounts (4 guns) per side were removed before this recommissioning. USS New Jersey (BB-62) is also firing during this exercise. Apparently, this day, USS Missouri beat USS New Jersey in overall gunnery, including rate of fire, to earn the Battle E award. New Jersey suffered a few gun casualties (breakdowns) as well. However this may just be typical “scuttlebutt” as it was sourced from the comment section of this video on YouTube. Video from YouTube user ‘1MightyMo’

USS Enterprise (CV 6) turning hard at 27 knots during the Battle of Santa Cruz, October 26, 1942. Crews tend to a sticken Wildcat when the AA gunners start firing at incoming dive bombers. Soon the rudder is put hard over and water splashes coat the flight deck. 20 more 20mm Oerlikons were added at Pearl before the battle. The first batch of 40mm Bofors were also installed. Downed Japanese aircraft can be seen burning on the water. 428-NPC-13400
