After an interview, a journalist asked Jayakanthan to put his shirt on so they could take his photograph. JK said, "If you want to take my photo, I am here. If you want to take the photo of my shirt, it's there on the hanger." And this is Ashokamitran in Iowa. Honesty 🤩

Prof Ananth, former Director of IIT Madras: "We scientists and engineers think if we do A, we will get B. But society is so complex that you don't get B, you get B prime which is very different from B. And to understand that, you need a humanities background." /a

"Do not bring your whole self to work, because if your whole self can't stand to work with other people whose whole self is there, then you can't work. So do not bring your whole self to work. Instead, bring Buddha, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus to work." ~ Jonathan Haidt

What NRN said 🇮🇳 Performance ➡️ Recognition ➡️ Respect ➡️ Power 🇺🇸 To surpass US GDP is hard. We need to work 12 hours/day 👤But beating US etc is nothing if the poorest Indian doesn't get better access to health/education It's not going to be easy. So, work hard. #70hours

I uploaded some of Sridhar Vembu's recent writings to Google's NotebookLM & asked it to generate a video. This is how it summarized Sridhar's views: 📚 Rewriting The Rules of Business: Employees over shareholders, capability over metrics 💸 Critique of Modern Economics: Academic economists as detached priesthood with toy models 🌾 The Radical Rural Solution: Start with a nail cutter, not a Boeing 747 🧘 A Foundation of Values: Financial value isn't the goal, it's the byproduct

"English as a status symbol is a bigger barrier today than caste. I know how deeply it is holding back our rural youth." ~ Sridhar Vembu So, true. Here's a fascinating story about writer Sujatha (from his wife). While working at BEL, despite his colleagues' objections, Sujatha hired an engineer who was poor in English. (In the interview, when the panel told him to go on, the kid stood up to leave, because he thought they asked him to go). Sujatha said that didn't matter, and he would pick up the language. And the engineer went on to play an important role in the development of the Electronic Voting Machine. The question is, how many Sujathas do we have, even today? I think Sridhar's solution will work at a systemic level.

Fascinating. I was looking for some early predictions of the cloud and its impact on working/living for my book and came across this clipping. Arthur C Clarke predicted remote working, the cloud, the death of distance and the decline of cities in 1964. #ContrarianReads
