27 September 1956. US Captain Milburn Grant "Mel" Apt (b. 9 April 1924) became the first pilot to exceed Mach 3. He flew the Bell X-2 46674 rocketplane to Mach 3.196 (2,094 mph). At 65,589 feet. It began uncontrolled oscillations. 'Mel' Apt was unable to escape and was killed.
