6 November 1929. First flight of the Junkers G.38. German four-engine, large transport prototype, featuring a blended wing design which provided access to all four power plants. It was also licence built in Japan as the Mitsubishi Ki-20.

3 June 1973. First crash of a supersonic transport aircraft occurred as a Tupolev Tu-144 broke up during a demonstration flight at the Paris Air Show.

28 July 2010. USAF Boeing C-17 Globemaster III 00-0173 crash resulted in the deaths of all four crew members: Major Aaron Malone (pilot), Major Michael Freyholtz (co-pilot), Lt. Col. Paul F. "Rocky" Kippenberger (safety observer), and MSgt. Thomas Cicardo (loadmaster).

20 January 1974. First 'accidental' flight of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, US multirole jet fighter aircraft. During high-speed taxi test, the GD test pilot, Phil Oestricher, decided to lift off to avoid crashing the machine, and safely landed it six minutes later.

8 May 1975. The second prototype YF-16 (72-1568) flown by Neil Anderson suffered an undercarriage malfunction and landed wheels-up on the runway at Carswell AFB, Texas. The aircraft was only slightly damaged (inlet duct buckling, FS227 bulkhead cracks).

10 May 1967. Northrop M2-F2, NASA 803 crash landing at Edwards Air Force Base.

18 April 1947. The Royal Navy detonated 6,700 tonnes of explosives to destroy the Heligoland Naval base entirely and remove it as a fleet base location for Germany. This resulted in one of the biggest single non-nuclear detonations in history.

14 December 1986. The Rutan Model 76 Voyager, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, took off from Edwards AFB for the first flight around the world without stopping or refuelling.

17 April 1993. 11.37.19 UTC/GMT. Landing of STS-56, NASA Space Shuttle Discovery. The primary payload was the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science-2 collecting data on the relationship between the sun's energy output and Earth's middle atmosphere.

15 February 1996. 30 years ago today. At the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in China, a Long March 3B rocket, carrying Intelsat 708, crashed into a rural town after lift-off, resulting in a substantial but unconfirmed number of civilian casualties.

27 September 1956. US Captain Milburn Grant "Mel" Apt (b. 9 April 1924) became the first pilot to exceed Mach 3. He flew the Bell X-2 46674 rocketplane to Mach 3.196 (2,094 mph). At 65,589 feet. It began uncontrolled oscillations. 'Mel' Apt was unable to escape and was killed.

6 December 1988. 23:36:11 UTC/GMT. Landing of Space Shuttle Atlantis after mission STS-27 carrying a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defence. Insulation from the right SRB detached during launch and damaged 700+ thermal tiles on the shuttle’s right side.

3 December 1945, Captain Eric Brown became the first pilot to land and take-off from aircraft carrier (HMS Ocean) in a jet aircraft.

6 December 1917. Halifax, Nova Scotia. In memory of more than 1,800 people killed and 9,000 injured in the most devastating man-made explosion in the pre-atomic age.

31 December 1968. First flight of the Tupolev Tu-144 'Charger'. Soviet supersonic transport aircraft and world's first supersonic transport aircraft to fly. It remains one of only two SSTs to enter commercial service.

17 April 1998. 18.19.00 UTC/GMT. Launch of STS-90 Space Shuttle Columbia from Kennedy LC-39B on a 16-day mission that marked the final flight of the European Space Agency's Spacelab laboratory module. It would conclude with Columbia’s last daytime landing.
