20 January 1974. First 'accidental' flight of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, US multirole jet fighter aircraft. During high-speed taxi test, the GD test pilot, Phil Oestricher, decided to lift off to avoid crashing the machine, and safely landed it six minutes later.

27 September 1956. US Captain Milburn Grant "Mel" Apt (b. 9 April 1924) became the first pilot to exceed Mach 3. He flew the Bell X-2 46674 rocketplane to Mach 3.196 (2,094 mph). At 65,589 feet. It began uncontrolled oscillations. 'Mel' Apt was unable to escape and was killed.
