May 5th is known as Liberation Day in the Netherlands. In the final months of the Second World War, Canadian forces were assigned to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. The great bravery and sacrifice of Canadians were not the only help our country gave the Netherlands during the war. Some members of the Dutch royal family found sanctuary in Canada during the war and Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa in 1943. These powerful connections helped form warm bonds of friendship and respect between the Dutch and the Canadians which continue to this day. To learn more, visit:

Notre drapeau flotte en signe de gratitude pour leur service et leur sacrifice.

On this day in 1915, John McCrae wrote his famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. It was written by McCrae after he presided over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier during the First World War. The poem was officially published in Punch Magazine on December 8th, 1915. So many years later, his poem continues to poignantly express the tragedy and losses of war, and the importance of carrying on their memories. #LestWeForget
