HE Atiku Abubakar is not doing audio leadership. Today, he and his Vice, HE Rotimi Amaechi, pulled up at a fuel station to see, feel, and hear directly from Nigerians. His mission? Restore fuel subsidy and bring real relief to the masses. If you’ve ever waited in that fuel queue, you know why this matters. No be grammar. Na action. When a leader shows up where the people dey suffer, you know it’s serious. Time to follow who know road.

“While Nigerians are lectured about hardship, those in power preside over brazen waste, corruption and a budget process that makes a mockery of fiscal discipline. The people are told there is no money to ease their pain, yet government always seems to find money for its own appetites.” “Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy with one announcement and no credible protection in place for the families who would bear the shock. Petrol, transport and the cost of moving food rose. He promised that the savings would benefit Nigerians. Three years later, the pain has an address in every home. Bola, where is the benefit?” - HE Atiku Abubakar.

Former Gov Donald Duke to HE Atiku Abubakar: “I congratulate you for your tenacity and need and remind all of us that the situation we find ourselves today is perhaps the worst this country has ever been, worse than it was in 1999 certainly. It will require not just all the attributes that you have and that you have expressed. It's absolutely unbelievable that a nation could deteriorate so fast. Really, we don't have a nation any longer. We just have a geographical space. So you're a veteran at this battle. You've taken the bull by the horn several times. You may have been battered, but you're unbowed. I sincerely wish you the best, because your success will be our collective success.”

When I first argued that government should review its approach to the withdrawal of petrol subsidy and consider responsible intervention to bring down the cost of fuel, Mr. Bola Tinubu dismissed my proposal as demonstrating “serious ignorance” of governance and the economy. My dear Bola, events since then have raised a simple question. Is the Nigeria Labour Congress also ignorant when it calls for urgent intervention to cushion workers from rising petrol prices? Are petroleum marketers ignorant when they call for policies that strengthen domestic refining and help moderate pump prices? Are Nigerian manufacturers ignorant when they warn that power-related expenses now consume more than half of operating costs? And are the millions of Nigerians crying out because they can no longer afford transportation, food and other basic necessities also ignorant? When workers, producers, marketers and ordinary families are all raising the alarm, government must listen. If everybody who questions your policy is ignorant, while only the President is presumed to be wise, then we have a leadership problem on our hands. - Atiku Abubakar.
