More than 100 Pakistani Sikh pilgrims, granted Indian visas for the pilgrimage to Sri Hemkund Sahib, were left stranded at Faisalabad International Airport after Pakistani authorities reportedly stopped them from boarding a flight to Dubai, seeking an NOC. The pilgrims were scheduled to travel from Dubai onward to New Delhi. India had issued visas to 104 Sikh devotees. With the Wagah-Attari land route unavailable to them, the pilgrims had already been forced to opt for a considerably more expensive journey through a third country. After waiting for clearance at the airport, the pilgrims say they missed their flights, causing substantial financial loss. Distressed pilgrims are now appealing to Pakistani authorities to facilitate their pilgrimage by allowing them to cross into India through the Wagah-Attari border. For them, it is not merely a travel disruption, but an obstacle to a long-awaited religious pilgrimage.

Amritsar is not merely another destination. It is a holy city visited by millions of devotees and tourists from India and abroad. Train 22487 generally reaches Amritsar around 8:45 pm at Platform No. 7. With no escalator facility for movement over the footbridge, senior citizens, pilgrims and passengers carrying luggage face considerable difficulty. If operationally feasible, could Vande Bharat be received at Platform No. 1 and Train 22488 depart from there as well? The train presently originates/terminates at Old Delhi Railway Station (DLI). Reaching Old Delhi through heavy traffic and congestion can itself be challenging, particularly for elderly passengers and families. If technically and operationally possible, shifting its Delhi origin/termination to New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) would make this prestigious connection far more convenient. Perhaps such issues are normally brought to the authorities’ notice by local public representatives, civic organisations or NGOs. But as a resident of Amritsar and a regular traveller, I felt it was my responsibility to personally bring this genuine passenger concern to your attention. Sometimes a relatively small operational change can make a very big difference to thousands of travellers. Today, for the first time, I witnessed Congress legislators being heard collectively at Sri Akal Takht Sahib with such patience, dignity and respect. Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and other Congress MLAs were given ample time to explain their position on the anti-sacrilege legislation. Considering the Congress party’s historically difficult relationship with Sikh institutions, this was a significant moment. To me, it reflected the impartial stature of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and opened space for dialogue, accountability and reconciliation.

It is a larger fight between development and exploitation, democracy and military-style control. When people demand schools, hospitals, jobs and dignity, Islamabad answers with bans, FIRs, force and deployment. Pakistan lectures the world on Kashmir, but hides the anger, deprivation and democratic struggle inside Pakistan Occupied Jammu Kashmir. Is demanding development terrorism? Is demanding democracy a crime?

रात के 9 बज कर पाँच मिनट हो चुके हैं। कुछ देर पहले ही प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने देश को संबोधित किया। उसके बाद अमृतसर में सायरन की तेज़ आवाज़ें सुनाई दीं और ब्लैकआउट हो गया। जब लोग आसमान की ओर देख रहे थे, तो बादलों के बीच चाँद चमक रहा था और माहौल एकदम डरावना लग रहा था। इस दौरान, अमृतसर के पास गुरु नानक देव यूनिवर्सिटी की दिशा में कुछ लोगों ने ड्रोन देखे और उनका वीडियो भी रिकॉर्ड किया। इसके तुरंत बाद, अमृतसर के डिप्टी कमिश्नर का संदेश आया कि ब्लैकआउट लागू कर दिया गया है। सभी लोग घरों के अंदर रहें, खिड़कियाँ बंद रखें, पर्दे लगा लें और खिड़कियों से दूर रहें। घबराने की ज़रूरत नहीं है, जब तक बिजली दोबारा नहीं आती, सावधानी रखें।
