South Africaโs Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, said: โWe want Rwanda to get the Formula One. We want South Africa to get the Formula One. Why is it when it comes to Africa we should be treated like we only can get one while you have Europe that has seven? It can't be. It will never be.โ โItโs not a zero-sum game.โ A message worth sharing. Africa should have more opportunities to host major global sporting events. Video courtesy

President Kagame responds to those who say: "Formula 1 is too big for a small country like Rwanda." I tell those people to take a deep breath and calm down, and wait to see what is coming. First, we are people, like the people of other parts of the world. There is nothing, no event, nothing that is bigger than people. So, we are a small country, but we are a people. Formula One is big indeed, but it is not a goal just in itself. In fact, Formula One is part of the big picture of what Rwanda has to do. We made progress as a country, as a people, but also for this particular Formula One, as a sport for Africa. We are not looking at just Rwanda alone. We are looking at Rwanda in the context of the continent, and we have indeed ambitions to bring in other African brothers and sisters to participate. It is Rwandan, it is African, and it is a big deal that we are very happy to be associated with.

โI'm happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa by hosting a Formula One Grand Prix. A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at Formula One for the good progress in our discussions so far. I assure you that we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment which it deserves.โ โ President Paul Kagame ๐ท๐ผ

Question: You're a pragmatist, I think, as a leader, but what I also notice is you're an optimist. What keeps you optimistic, because we've listed a whole list of challenges already today? H.E President Paul Kagame: โWell, I start with knowing where I have come from as a person and my country. You also understand that the same weaknesses or failures that create such tragedies, like my own faced in a country of genocide, there are people behind that. There is politics behind that. But in the recovery and where we are today, you know that there are also people who can do good things and who can refuse to be crushed by the weight of these problems and imagine, deal with them and look for a better future, as has happened in our case. Change is possible. I think that's the message. Change is possible.โ
