Two armed terrorists were shot dead by the Ugandan army in Kampala on Tuesday following reports of a suspected bomb explosion near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, just hours before the country’s annual Martyrs Day celebrations. Martyrs Day, a major religious event in Uganda, marks the execution of 45 Christian converts in the 1880s under the orders of Buganda’s King Mwanga II and draws large numbers of pilgrims from across East Africa. Uganda, under President Yoweri Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule, has faced repeated threats from militant groups, including factions linked to the Islamic State.

Tanzanian opposition leader and CHADEMA party Chairman Tundu Lissu was on Monday remanded in custody until June 2, 2025, after his two cases, one for treason and another for publishing false information, were mentioned at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam. In the treason case, the prosecution informed the court that investigations are still ongoing, while in the publishing case, they stated that several witnesses and pieces of evidence have been assembled, with a hearing set for the same date. Lissu appeared before the court as crowds of CHADEMA supporters gathered outside in solidarity. As he left, he flashed the party’s signature two-finger salute while supporters chanted back, “No Reforms, No Election."
