Watching this 1971 Yugoslav census footage is fascinating. One of the most striking moments is how many Bosnian Slavs identify as “Muslim”not simply as a religion, but as a nationality. Under socialist Yugoslavia, “Muslim” (with a capital M) was officially recognized as a national category, despite the word itself referring to followers of Islam. For many rural, poorly educated villagers, the distinction between faith and ethnicity was far from clear. In the Qur’an, a Muslim is simply one who submits to God, regardless of ethnicity. Combined with the long-standing Serbian habit of calling Bosnian Muslims “Turks” because of their Ottoman-era faith, this blurred identities even further. Two decades later, Bosnia’s devastating war would expose how deeply questions of nation, ethnicity, and religion had become intertwined.

The Albanian who resurrected Egypt without speaking a word of Arabic. Muhammad Ali Pasha, born of Albanian parents in Kavalla, arrived in Egypt in 1801 as a junior Ottoman officer. Within 4 years he was Viceroy. He abolished the Mameluke dynasty in a single night (1811), centralised power, modernised the army & laid the foundations of the modern Egyptian state. As Prof. Roy Casagranda notes this Albanian didn’t just govern Egypt; he recreated it from the ruins of Ottoman neglect and Napoleonic disruption. His dynasty ruled Egypt until 1952. His mosque still dominates Cairo’s skyline. 200 years on, his aura is inescapable. 🇦🇱 Albania gave Egypt its greatest builder. History rarely gets the credit right.

Kosova, 1987. The poorest and most underdeveloped region of Yugoslavia not by accident, but after decades of political and economic marginalization. A year later, the Trepça miners’ hunger strike would become a defining act of resistance, followed by Belgrade’s crackdown, the imprisonment of Kosovo’s leadership, including Azem Vllasi, and the dismantling of Kosovo’s autonomy. What followed helped set Yugoslavia on its path to collapse.

The once-Albanian Tregovishta today’s Rožaje was absorbed into a contrived “Bosniak” identity, not by its own choice. The town kept its original name until 1912. In 1700, its population was overwhelmingly Kelmend, Hoti, Shkreli and Vukël 🇦🇱to the core.
