Mom here: Sam has been having a little trouble with his back legs. Nothing new, just more dramatic lately. His back legs gave out trying to go up a flight of stairs - which is new. So we sat on the floor together and shared blueberries. Calling the vet to get him in for his Ketamine and Librela shot which always seem to help. Growing old is part of life, we will care for him just as he cared for me for so many years. Video: Sam lying on a tile floor being fed blueberries.

Mom here : He gave years of his life to keeping me safe. Now the job is simple: gentle pets, quiet mornings, unconditional love. I’ve done this hundreds of times— and it’s still not enough to repay him. Even now, retired and gray, he still reminds me I’m enough. So every morning, I stand here and remind him—he is enough. Pax is trained to alert Mom to impending medical complications. Just like I am. Some dogs alert to impending medical conditions through olfactory - they can smell changes in blood sugar like for diabetes alert dogs. Some alert to behavioral changes in their human. Mom, because of her brain injury becomes overwhelmed and her brain cannot filter out stimuli, which progresses to more complicated problems. She displays “tells” like rapping one finger. Pax watches for this and alerts through a nudge. He will continue to alert her until she recognizes she is overwhelmed and can take appropriate action. This alert is important because Mom can act on this and stay longer in a setting. She remains healthy and independent. Dogs who demonstrate the ability to alert to a medical crisis can be trained to communicate with their handlers in various ways, like pawing at the handler, nudging the handler, jumping up on the handler, or even give one bark. Some dogs develop unique ways of communicating with their handlers, like refusing to let them leave the house or even refusing to let them stand up. Each team is unique. The significance of dogs who alert to medical crises before they occur is not in the alerts themselves, but in the opportunities that are presented to handlers to know something is awry before it happens. Once a handler is aware that a particular medical condition is going to occur, he or she can take appropriate action, like getting to a safe place, taking emergency medication, or getting help from someone else. I move a little slower these days, but that just means I have more time to notice the small joys—warm sunshine, soft grass, cronchy carrots, and quiet moments with my favorite humans. I spend more time at the vet now in retirement. But everyone at the vet’s office gives me snuggles and skritches! They checked my osteoarthritis, I got some pokies and yabbies, and have an ear infection, they treated. But, even though Mom brushes my teefies, I have to have some removed soon. I still got peanut butter treatos for extra special patients. Although, I think all doggos get them, they just wanted me to feel special! Video: Sampson lying on a tile floor as Mom scratches his back, and rubs his ear. He looks back happy at Mom. Then a few still photos of Sam looking serious then happy.

Mom here: Sampson’s time in service dog vest has officially come to an end. The process of retirement and transition is complete. Sam must pass a public access test with his training organization Paws Giving Independence yearly to keep his vest privileges. This year we opted out. His last time in vest was the launch of our book “INSISTENT.” Seems fitting. Now he will live his life in leisure snoozling, playing, and eating peanut butter treatos. He still likes to do “tasks” and we’ll let him as long as he wants around the house. For me, the final words, that he’ll no longer have public access or time in vest, and “Happy Retirement Sammie” from PGI was like the final sign off from a working K9. It has had a profound emotional impact on me. My partner will never again be by my side, and I will look to, and rely on Pax Bellator moving forward. We will form a bond that will be immeasurable over time. Sam has earned his time off, Pax has shown he’s up to the task. Now it is my responsibility to switch my mind set and trust in Pax while still loving my Sam-Sam to the fullest and providing him the Best! Retirement! Ever! at home. I’ll continue to share throwback photos of him working - I hope you all will help me embrace this transition in our life and in our future posting. Sampson’s legacy lives on in our book and through our 501(c)(3) Sampson’s Legacy Foundation. His presence gave me a life and changed a world culture for science and service dog handlers. His paw prints left a true legacy. Happy retirement Sam! You earned every second. ❤️ Thank you all for loving him as much as we do! A hard NOPE turned into tail wagging fun! Pax was cautious of moving sidewalks. As much as Mom and Pax are in airports rushing between flights during layovers, moving sidewalks and escalators are a must! A trip to the Tucson Airport this weekend, and an hour of nopes-turned-to-let’s do it again - with Marshal Jim wiped all the scary away! Mom even taught Pax the dismount to keep his paws safe, a “Pax, 1, 2, 3 Jump!” Several airport security officers watched with fascination and were so proud of Pax! Video: Marshal Jim, a tall lean man wearing neutral colored pants, a blue shirt and ball cap tried multiple times to lead Pax, a black Labrador retriever wearing a red service dog vest on to a moving sidewalk, each time Pax refused. Then, Mom, a woman with a long gray braid, a pink and white striped shirt, and jeans, leads Pax on the sidewalk, and Pax happily walks to Marshal Jimmie pets. Then Mom and Pax practice the dismount with a successful on then ride then off.
