There is no more time for debate. This week, the Taliban announced that it is resuming public stoning of women as a death sentence. I have raised the alarm for three years that this day was inevitable. Afghan women will not be the scapegoat for the failure of international diplomacy. They expect fundamental human rights to be protected and that any engagement with the Taliban ensures women’s prosperity and protections. The entrenchment of gender apartheid as a prosecutable offence in international law is a first step. We must not return to the horrors of their first regime. The Taliban never changed - they tricked the world.
