A major incident unfolded this afternoon in Surrey's Whalley neighbourhood. Two people were stabbed, with one victim dying at the scene. The suspect was later shot by police & subsequently died in hospital. SPS say the incident began around 1 p.m. when officers responded to a report of an assault at a building in the 13300 block of Old Yale Rd. Police located two victims suffering from stab wounds, while the suspect had fled the scene. A short time later, police located the suspect nearby. A confrontation occurred, resulting in officers firing their service weapons. The suspect was seriously injured, transported to hospital, & later pronounced dead. IHIT is investigating the homicide, while IIO is reviewing the police actions.

The stretch of 32 Ave b/w 168 & 176 St is closed to traffic. As of Nov 10th, there are now 94 extortion files - 43 involving shots fired - 13 new cases have opened just this month.

New: A woman is in critical condition after being struck by a bullet in a possible extortion-related shooting in Surrey’s Whalley area early this morning. Her partner told me she was lying in bed, trying to sleep, when the bullet hit her left shoulder. He says that she’s a 26 year old international student. Said they had just said goodnight when he felt a vibration from the next room. Moments later, she staggered in clutching her shoulder, bleeding from a gunshot wound. At least seven shots were fired into a home packed with people - as many as 20 residents, all renting rooms in the same house. Another resident said he moved in just a week ago - after the previous house he was renting, in the 10700-block of 141 St, was shot at on Oct. 6. The owner of that house, is apparently the landlord of this one as well. Surrey Police Service says it’s investigating links to extortion.

Delta Pd say the motorcycle rider sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries & was transported to hospital. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. Two males were shot dead in the underground parking lot of a residential apartment building in Surrey’s Newton around 10 p.m. Sunday night. The scene is near 133B St & 70B Ave, a very densely populated area. Children’s bicycles can be seen in the video, pointing to serious public safety concerns surrounding the shooting. IHIT is now investigating. Surrey Police say both males were pronounced dead at the scene. This comes the same day two other males were critically injured in a shooting near 152 St & 72 Ave.

City of Vancouver has restored the signage panels at the historic site in Coal Harbour to the ship’s original name, “Guru Nanak Jahaz.” “Following community feedback, we now refer to the ‘Komagata Maru’ ship by its correct name, ‘Guru Nanak Jahaz.’ Calling the ship by its correct name accurately honours the legacy,” the city said last year while declaring May 23 as Guru Nanak Jahaz Day. Guru Nanak Jahaz docked near the current location of Canada Place in 1914 carrying 340 Sikhs, 27 Muslims, & 12 Hindu passengers who came to challenge Canada’s racist & exclusionary immigration policies. They were denied entry despite having valid travel docs & were ultimately forced to return to British India, where 19 passengers were killed while protecting the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It is with great sorrow that we report the tragic incident where Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Director of SFJ in Canada & President of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the gurdwara at 8:27 p.m. Witnesses reported that two gunmen fled after shooting. IHIT is currently investigating the matter. At this time, the police have not released any further info regarding the incident.
