St Walburge’s congregation has grown from about 40 people to more than 300, yet Historic England still lists this Grade I Preston church as in poor condition, highly vulnerable and declining. That contrast moved me deeply. I’m overjoyed by Canon Cristofoli’s hope here, but sobered that the rescue remains unfinished. A £245,380 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant was awarded in 2025 to repair the south roofs over the sanctuary and make this crucial part watertight. I love what Preston has achieved. The money is protecting a place where people worship and walk in to pray—not an empty attraction. This is why living churches deserve protection.

This church is older than England itself. ⛪ Built around AD 670, Escomb Saxon Church near Bishop Auckland is one of only four complete Anglo-Saxon churches still standing in England. Even more remarkably, it was built using stone from a nearby Roman fort.

Imagine walking into a church that's older than England itself. Escomb Saxon Church was built around AD 675 and remains the oldest complete Saxon church in the UK. From its Roman stonework to its tiny Anglo-Saxon windows, it's one of Britain's greatest historic treasures.
