In the last three weeks, I conducted an extensive field trip across northwestern Nigeria, particularly Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Katsina states. I visited Nahuta community in Batsari LGA of Katsina State and observed elaborate artisanal mining activities, where ‘former’ bandits and community members collaborate in searching for critical minerals. The site has evolved into a full-fledged community with virtually everything needed available. Unsurprisingly, the sex-work market is also thriving there, as is typical in areas with unregulated mining. This community pioneered the current wave of community-bandit ‘peace deals’ in the state, with the Batsari agreement brokered in January 2025 and regarded as the most successful so far.

JAS discovers more bodies of ISWAP fighters from its latest and bloody attack. Here’s what caused this wave of fighting, just days after some people reported a truce: Following the September massacre of civilians in Darajamal by JAS fighters, ISWAP intensified its offensive against JAS members under Ali Ngulde’s command, who were responsible for the Darajamal killings, reportedly killing a significant number of them. In retaliation, about two weeks ago, Bakura’s faction launched a surprise attack on ISWAP positions across the islands. On Monday, 27 October, JAS mounted another assault but was met with a well-coordinated ISWAP ambush, resulting in the death of Ustaz, the Amir al-Jaish for Barwa. According to sources, Ustaz’s experience, especially his battlefield value, was said to be equivalent to those of more than 100, and his death has provoked considerable anger within JAS ranks, who still haven’t forgotten or forgiven ISWAP for Shekau’s death. The loss of Ustaz is believed to be fueling the group’s renewed and persistent offensives against ISWAP.

It’s gut-wrenching hearing soldiers cry as they identify 4 of their colleagues killed in last night’s ISWAP’s attack on the 50 Task Force Battalion in Marte. Had to cut that part out. Seems ISWAP went away with over 40 military motorcycles. The destruction of the base is huge.
