"Thank you, Mr. President. I rise today because I’m sickened. I'm sickened by the 16 Michigan House Republicans who voted last week to take back funding from organizations like Wigs4Kids with cancer; Kids-TALK, for kids who have been sexually abused; Rx Kids, for mothers and infants in low-income communities, and dozens of other worthy projects. Mr. President, my Republican colleagues never seem to miss an opportunity to lecture women on how they should handle their pregnancies, but when the opportunity arises to HELP KIDS and their parents, they rip the help away. Every Republican who voted for this and every Republican who supports this questionably legal political tactic should hang their head in shame. Thankfully, yesterday, five Senate Republicans joined all Senate Democrats in passing a bill that reinstates this funding. In passing this bill, we’re giving Michigan House Republicans another chance to fix their mistake, redeem themselves to outraged Michiganders and, more importantly, to do the right thing. The ball’s in your court, House Republicans. Thank you, Mr. President, and I'd like my remarks printed in the journal."

"Michigan voters elected women to run our state: Whitmer, Nessel, and Benson. And the Majority Caucus in the Michigan Senate, for the first time in history, is led by a woman and has more women than men. I understand that this fact may rankle insecure men like the former newspaper employee who, lacking control of his emotions, called the Attorney General the C-word and got himself fired. What this man and friends need to understand moving forward is that women aren’t putting up with this crap anymore, and we literally don’t have time to coddle members of the He-man Woman-Haters Club or whatever it is in someone that would make them say such a thing out loud. We’ve got things to do – like run the state of Michigan."

As a new state senator here in Michigan, on April 30 of 2020, I witnessed firsthand how terrifying it can be to try to vote and do my job when men in full tactical gear and openly carrying long guns loomed above us in the balcony that completely surrounds and overlooks the senate floor. I kept thinking to myself “We are fish in a barrel if any one of these guys decides to open fire.”🧵

If a Republican Governor is elected in Michigan in the future, the current weapons ban at the Michigan Capitol can easily be undone. To prevent that from happening, we must codify the existing weapons ban into law. That way, if the law is to be overturned, lawmakers will have to publicly stand by their vote. Visitors to our capitol and those of us who work there have every right to feel safe.
