Pat McAfee nailed it: College sports are in “absolute chaos,” there are no rules anyone can reliably follow, and Congress is now “our only option.” Coach Saban put the absurdity plainly: “Would we ever think that an NFL player could come back and play in college? It’s absolutely crazy.” College sports cannot survive as a courtroom free-for-all. It is time to pass the Protect College Sports Act, send it to President Trump’s desk, and sign it on College GameDay this fall.

Today is a monumental day for college athletics. The United States Senate voted to protect the hundreds of thousands of student athletes currently competing in college sports, the millions who will follow in their footsteps, and every college sports fan who wants to preserve this great American tradition for generations to come. After years of discussions and months of intense deliberations, we achieved what many said was impossible and succeeded in getting the Protect College Sports Act through the Senate with a huge bipartisan vote. I am proud of our success, and I trust the House of Representatives will remain focused on bringing stability to college sports by delivering the Protect College Sports Act to President Trump’s desk without delay.

For years, Jack Smith was able to ask his questions in secret, without me in the room. Today, the Senate got to ask questions. Unlike Jack Smith, we did so in public. Today is an important day for Trump Accounts. When I wrote this legislation, we had a simple goal: every child in America should have the opportunity to begin life with an investment account and a stake in the extraordinary economic engine that is the United States of America. That is why I deliberately drafted the legislation to provide for auto-enrollment—so Treasury could open accounts for all 70 million American children under the age of 18. For children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, the federal government will make a one-time $1,000 contribution to get them started. But the bigger idea here goes far beyond that first $1,000. For decades, we’ve talked about how to teach young Americans the value of saving, investing, and building wealth. Trump Accounts actually gives them the tools to do it. When a young person turns 18 and looks at an account that has been growing alongside them their entire life, capitalism is no longer an abstract concept. They’re an investor. They’re an owner. They have skin in the game. And my hope is that, decades from now, we look back at Trump Accounts as the beginning of an entire generation of Americans who became investors and owners from childhood. There is incredible momentum behind these accounts, and we are seeing more and more companies pledging to contribute to their employees’ accounts, which will only continue to help the next generation of Americans.

When I asked what evidence justified keeping those subpoenas secret, he pointed to Donald Trump. “Am I Donald Trump?” “You are not, sir.” “Are the members of the Senate Donald Trump?” “No.” “Was this order directed at Donald Trump?” “No.” So I asked again: Did you have a shred of evidence that Republican senators would destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses? Sen. Chuck Grassley just revealed that Jack Smith sent a subpoena to Verizon to tap my Senate office phone. This comes after learning that nearly 20% of Senate Republicans’ cellphones, including mine, were also subpoenaed. Arctic Frost is the Biden DOJ’s Watergate, and they need to be held accountable.

The claim that our college sports bill takes away athletes’ ability to get paid what they are worth is simply wrong. The old system, where everyone got paid but the athletes, wasn’t fair. As a conservative, I believe you ought to be able to reap the rewards of your labor. If you can sell millions of tennis shoes, you ought to be able to make millions of dollars. Our bill protects that right.

I’m not worried about the superstars. I’m worried about the 99% of college athletes who will never play in the NFL or NBA, but for whom sports is their ticket to college. If Congress does nothing, we risk ending up with a mini-NFL of 30 to 50 rich programs while everyone else gets priced out. The Protect College Sports Act is about preserving those opportunities.

Jack Smith succeeded in weaponizing the Department of Justice and the federal government to go after his political opponents. He stepped into the shoes of John Mitchell, and yet his abuse was far greater than John Mitchell’s. He brought the Department of Justice into disrepute. Instead of being apolitical, instead of enforcing the law, he willingly was conscripted as a foot soldier for the DNC. And you know what he also did? He re-elected President Donald Trump, because the American people were disgusted at his willingness to abuse power for partisan ends. I believe he has no regrets. I believe he has convinced himself that this witch hunt targeting half the country for partisan ends was justified. He brought the Department of Justice into disrepute, and he did enormous damage. I believe his conduct represents the most egregious abuse of power in the history of the Department of Justice.

We just had a tremendous bipartisan vote in the Senate to advance the Protect College Sports Act. Seventy-four senators voted to move forward. That bipartisan vote is a major step toward protecting student athletes, bringing order to college sports, and preserving the institution. I’m confident the Senate will pass it with a big bipartisan vote, the House will pass it, and we’ll put it on the president’s desk.
