This crime this massacre of the Iranian people is unprecedented in modern history. At a time when the world was celebrating, when people across the globe were welcoming the New Year, dancing, exchanging greetings, and looking forward to the future with hope, the Islamic Republic drenched the streets of Iran in blood. While the world was celebrating, the people of Iran were being shot — simply for seeking dignity, human worth, and the restoration of the lives that had been stolen from them. What was their crime? They wanted a better life. They had reached the limit of humiliation, poverty, repression, and injustice. They demanded the return of dignity and a future worthy of their children. The question is this: Where is the world in the 21st century? What difference is there between today and two thousand years ago or even the darkest chapters of human history? When international laws exist but are not enforced, when human rights conventions remain nothing more than words on paper, when global institutions and human rights organizations remain silent in the face of the slaughter of unarmed civilians then what is the purpose of all these structures, these meetings, these declarations? What is the responsibility of the United Nations? Where are the human rights organizations? What responsibility do the world’s powers bear when unarmed people are massacred for demanding their basic rights? If the world is only going to watch, if human blood is reduced to statistics, if the cries for justice from the Iranian people are ignored, then what meaning remains in all these claims of human rights, freedom, and human dignity? The people of Iran came to the streets with empty hands. Not for war. Not for violence. But for life, for the future, for their most basic human rights. Today, we stand to say this clearly: Their voices have not been silenced. Their blood will not be forgotten. And history will judge the world for its silence today. President Donald J.
