Everything seems to happen by coincidence, where we never planned anything. But somehow it happens at the right moment. 🦋: for me, we’re a couple that balances each other. With nong being muay (a woman with East Asian features) and me being a farang (western girl), there’s a balance and similarities between us with many things. What changed your mindset? 🧸: I felt that in the past, I’d been working quite a lot. And I feel I want to save some money too and use it more for other things instead. I’d already bought so many things, and I reached a point where I felt ‘hey’, I just want to live life and save/keep these moments more, instead of wasting many hours in the shop. It’s just that feeling that, I’d rather spend this time together more. Those other things are just material possessions – I can find them anytime. But the moments I want to cherish, and want to change to do this, I can’t buy those with money. And I feel like those are the things that really matter. It’s really nothing and I’ll be able to save some money too.

Until the next day, when we saw each other and I told her and until this day she still hasn’t read it yet 😭 🦋: we both talk about our health a lot. She’ll be the first one I’ll message saying ‘my tummy hurts’, and she’d always have some sort of meds or say what to do. 🧸: next time you message me, I’ll ignore it 😭 🦋: if you don’t respond to me, I’ll be calling you. 🧸: I’m gonna wait and see 🦋: I’ll be like ‘you, my tummy hurts’ 🧸: I’ll believe it when I see it, we’ll see 👤: there will another sulking. 🧸: no, no sulking. Nowadays it’s something to laugh about. 🦋: oh, and sometimes she doesn’t respond to me and I’ll be like ‘okay, not answering me’ and send ‘not responding huh!’ 🧸: but when I see it, I go on the chat and respond immediately with *lots of messages* 🦋: so true. So she didn’t respond and two days after I messaged her saying ‘not responding huh’ 🧸: it wasn’t days, it was a matter of hours 🦋: no, this was another day 🧸: no, it was only just hours 🦋: noo, another day. #ลีน่าหมิว #LenaMiu #lalinalena #ลีน่าลลินา 🦋: yes. Honestly, during the floods, I was one of those people who had never experienced flooding in my life. When it was close to home like that time, where I left my house and ended up getting stranded in the floodwater in a way. That made me understand how difficult it must be for people who have to deal with flooding. Like experiencing it myself made me realise that even just stepping out of my house for a little bit was frightening, it was no joke at all, it’s actually a very serious matter. And all the important things people keep in their homes, things that hold sentimental value for many people. It made me realise that flooding is a much bigger issue than I had imagined. So I talked to people in the group, the ones I usually go on charity trips/make merit with, and asked, ‘should we go out and help this time?’, because there were areas that had been hit really hard, and the water hasn’t gone down at all. Like on the day I went to Prathum, not many people had gone to that area, and people hadn’t received much help yet. I felt that since I had the opportunity to help, why shouldn’t I? It’s so easy for us to order food and essential supplies, like sanitary pads, and send them to women who need them. I felt like it’s not hard at all for me and is within my capabilities to be going there in person. It only meant sacrificing a few hours of my life to make someone smile. In truth, there were so many elders who really appreciated us being there. They’d say ‘oh, thank you so much. I’m so happy you came’. I think sometimes those moments are all it takes to make us happy. 🎤: so you coordinated everything yourself? 🦋: yes, there were some seniors who were already regularly involved in this kind of work. I told them that I wanted to help out, so they helped coordinate everything for me, and that’s how I got the chance to go out and help. 🎤: what was it like when you went to the affected areas and saw everything? 🦋: it was brutal. First of all, the water isn’t clean water. In the floodwater, there are many bacteria and with being around contaminated water meant people had to be extremely careful about hygiene. It really made me feel for the people who have to live through flooding. 🎤: how deep was the water? 🦋: up to my boots/wellies, I think. When I went to Prathum, it was you up to my wellies. But when I went to the Khlong Chan (housing estate) oh my, the flooding there was really severe. People living in the apartment/flats couldn’t get out at all. They had to receive supplies while staying inside their flats/apartments, so we had to take a boat in to deliver things to them. 🎤: what did they say to you, when you… 🦋: they were so happy that we went. They really appreciated us being there. I think it meant that they could see there were still people who cared about them and were willing to support them. 🎤: was what you saw worse than what you’d imagined? 🦋: it was serious. I’d never really imagined flooding in my head before. I had absolutely no idea what it meant to live through one. But when I went to the affected areas, I thought, ‘woah, this is brutal’, they can’t go about your daily lives at all. They were genuinely trapped there. 🎤: from what you saw, what kind of assistance was still lacking? 🦋: actually, when I went to the affected areas, there were already many people helping out and brought like, ready made meals. But there were other things people still lack and needed, such as rice (uncooked grains), dried food, and even sanitary pads. That’s where I noticed that the support for these essentials was still insufficient. So when I went to Prathum, I made sure to arrange for sanitary pads as well. 🎤: were they surprised that you went there to help in person? 🦋: yes, I feel that simply sending supplies or donating money is different from actually going there in person and helping people yourself. I feel like if I’m going to do something, I want to give it my all and make sure the supplies reach them directly, right into their hands. 🎤: if you get another opportunity like this, would you go out and help again? 🦋: if I get the chance, I have projects like this. Every year, I have a project where like, I go help children in remote mountain communities with my mum, starting back when we were in Chiang Mai. It’s become an annual thing for me, like helping animals. But this time, it was an emergency caused by a natural disaster, so I decided to start this project right away 🎤: who inspired you to help others? Who has been your main role model? 🦋: I’d say my mum. She always liked inviting me to make merit (or charity projects), like going up into the mountains to make merit and provide meals for young children. We started doing that when we lived in Chiang Mai, and I think I’ve gradually picked up a lot from those experiences

I don’t really like relationships that are superficial/surface level. If I’m invested in someone, connection has gotta to be deep. For me, that there needs to be in depth conversations with each other. 🧔🏻♂️: I’m curious about the kind of deep questions you two talk about. I just want to know what kind of topics lead your conversations into deeper discussions. 🧸: sometimes it doesn’t have to be that deep. But it’s just be about our thoughts or perspectives on things like… 🦋: it’s more like for instance, we’ll have a topic and we’ll ask each other like, ‘okay, what do you think about this?’ and ‘why do you think that way?’ and ‘why did you choose to make that decision?’. It’s like we’re trying to understand each other and who they are (where they are coming from). 🧔🏻♂️: what their logic and thoughts are 🦋: yes, because there’s no way we’re going to think exactly the same about everything. Even though we might have a lot in common, at the end of the day, we grew up differently. 🧔🏻♂️: and why do you try to understand the other person perspective? 🦋: because she’s important. When someone is important in my life, I’m someone who wants to understand them as much as I can. No human being is perfect, so when there’s a side to them like ‘why are they like this’ I have to take the time to try and understand why they are the way they are.
