In January 2025 two Chinese women out shopping in Kobe and inadvertently stopped inside the railroad crossing and were hit by a train. The driver of the train wasn’t able to see them as they were behind a pole. Their families are suing the train company for $900,000 in damages as the signage was unclear. Since 2009 there have been four other incidents at this crossing, including one death.

Thieves are ripping the copper roofs off temples and shrines up in Tochigi prefecture, some of which were founded a 1000 years ago. It’s probably only a few hundred bucks worth of copper but it’s gonna cost $5~10k to repair. The thieves appear to be professionals
