HAL did screwdrivergiri of MiG 27, but when spares were in short supply, the IAF's Base Repair Depots (BRD) indigenized them and kept aircraft flying. This video from Aero India 2007 of BRD import substituted products. Should give egsprts an idea of how many parts are needed

Saras Mk1 from 2019. It was a sad day when I saw it doing touch and go near HAL. When I drove home later that afternoon, I heard that it had crashed. What went wrong? Saras Mk1 that crashed had twin rear fuselage mounted engines. That design was discarded. They now have a new design with wing mounted propellers. I recall reading that they wanted Saras Mk1 to have "clean wings".

Yesterday in an animated Space on X, I had a rant about the fact that we have not had the motivation to reverse engineer products we have screwdrivered since boomers were babies. AM Rajkumar was asked to test fly Chinese MiG 21s in Iraq 1980s. Here is what he said (poor audio)

It was the IAF that converted a short ranged supersonic dart called the MiG 21 into a multirole fighter that took on and shot down an F-104 and an F-16, while still managing to be the prime ground attack fighter that put runways out of action and brought an end to the 1971 war

The variety of technologies developed for the Tejas that have found their way into other platforms is admirable. But the Tejas itself is not there and unable to contribute to IAF numbers. This adds to the idea that the Tejas is one never ending research project. All very good but I want to see numbers.
