In 2017, a Tunisian court, denied the removal of the word “Atig” from an elderly Black Tunisians name. In Tunisia, the word “Atig” which translates to “freed by” was added to Black Tunisians and their descendants names. This preceded their last name which were typically* the name of their ancestors slave owners. Black Tunisians with this word added to their name faced discrimination. Further subjecting them to poverty, unequal opportunities and racism. It wasn’t until 2020 Hemdane Atig Dali, an 81 year old Black Tunisian, was the first Black Tunisian was allowed to legally remove “Atig” from his name along with his family. Now he is proudly: Hemdane Ben Jemaa Ben Massoud Dali. Although this historical moment is one to celebrate, the name is still attached to Black Tunisians names and they have to legally request for it to be removed. Many still report being discriminated against. *in this specific case I wasn’t able to confirm if Dali was the slave owner who freed their ancestors or if it was their ancestor who was freed. Based on other information I read, I believe it’s the first.

If you watch the first 10 mins of this on the vision the late John Garang had for Sudan, you’d stop villanizing him. A united Sudan where everyone is free to practice their religion & have equal opportunities regardless of race, ethnicity or tribe.(captions for the Arabic parts.)

“The civilians of Sudan are the hostages.” A very brave Sudani did an interview on BBC today to tell the world what they’re enduring. The full interview is below, so you can listen while you scroll. She talks about feeling abandoned by the army and the world, ethnically/racially motivated killings, and Darfur. She had a lot on her mind, as you can probably imagine, with everything happening, so she didn’t get to mention the looting and mass SA but wants the world to be aware of that as well. #KeepEyeOnSudan #EyesOnDarfur
