I recently met with the teacher unions on the sidelines of the Department of Basic Education’s Strategic Planning session in Pretoria. The meeting focused on the urgent issue of budget cuts affecting the education sector. I am committed to protecting the basic education sector from further financial strain and to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of South Africa’s basic education system.

Of the pit toilets identified in the SAFE Initiative's 2018 audit, as of 31 March 2025, we have eradicated 96%. This is significant progress from 7 years ago when Government identified nearly 3372 schools across the country which relied on these dangerous structures. Today, we have 141 of those identified toilets left. 90 of these are in construction phases and should be completed between this month and June - taking it to 98% completion. This is an achievement of scale, but it is not a victory. While we are at the tail end of the 2018 audit - we need initiate a new audit which will make sure whatever was missed and built after the audit is identified and eradicated. We won’t stop. We can’t stop. Safe sanitation and dignity for our learners and teachers.

Today, we join the world in commemorating International Day of Education. Education is the backbone of our society; it shapes opportunity, strengthens our democracy, and builds the future of our nation. At the heart of quality education are the foundations of learning. When children learn to read, write, and count with understanding from an early age, they are empowered for lifelong success. Every learner deserves an environment that protects their wellbeing and unlocks their potential. This International Day of Education reminds us of our shared responsibility to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 - ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all. Together with our youth, educators, parents, and communities, we must continue to co-create an education system that leaves no learner behind. #InternationalDayOfEducation

On October 5th Dep. Basic Education hosts the National Teaching Awards. But this year, I’ve decided to involve YOU in the process. I’m excited to launch the #MyTeacher campaign which seeks to appreciate educators who go beyond the call of duty and make real impact in the lives of others. There are so many passionate educators; who work tirelessly in difficult environments. But they show up. And they change lives. Nominate one such educator. And they could be recognized for their service at the National Teaching Awards. Tag us on your nominations with #MyTeacher. Details on the DBE page. Let’s appreciate and celebrate our educators. I’d love to hear your stories 😊

Remember our #MyTeacher award winner, Relebogile Maloma? We had a little chat after the National Teaching Awards yesterday. I cannot tell you how brave this girl has been. She’s completing her final rounds of chemo and Ms Mbatha from Nellmapius Primary School has been helping her keep up with her school work. She remains in the top 10 in her grade 3 class. The life-changing impact of an educator can never be overstated. Recognizing Relebogile and Ms Mbatha was my highlight of the #NTAs

Today was a good day at the office. 👷🏾♀️ We ended the day at Emarhambeni Junior Primary School KuQumbu. I was thrilled to learn that the contractor finished this project a week ahead of schedule. From Monday, the learners, teachers and staff will benefit from their newly built toilets. This a big step towards improving safety, dignity and quality schooling environment’s. There’s still plenty to do in this province; but the problems are not insurmountable. Niyonwabele iHuman Rights Day. Reading is a foundational skill on which all other learning is built, this journey starts with a single book! I encourage you to get involved: read to a child, donate or share your cherished books, buy books for those who need them, or visit your local library with a child. Let’s work together to ensure that every child can experience the joy and benefits of reading, igniting hope for a brighter future. #NBW2024 #ReadToLead

Happy International Mother Language Day✨ International benchmarking tests show that our learners who are studying both in their mother tongue and an additional language, far outperform those who do not. Therefore we need to recommit as a country to invest in mother tongue based bilingual education (MTBBE) by having teachers who are able to teach learners in their mother tongue, and also ensure that we’ve got the quality material that will support this kind of teaching. #InternationalMotherLanguageDay
