How do you find #wildhorses to feed them on a 9000-acre #ranch? They magically appear when they hear the Polaris motor to make sure they don't miss a meal! Many of the #wildmustangs in this group were saved from kill pens. We hope to add at least two more to this #Skydog #herd.

Maverick - a #quarterhorse, not a #mustang - was left here by a ranch hand and joined a wild herd. With a seahorse blaze, he’s still got some great moves for a 30yo. He was delighted when treatment for a skin infection ended so he could leave the barn and go back to his friends.

Bruce was happy to arrive at Skydog in Santa Ynez, which is for older horses - he’s around 30 - and those with special needs. Bailey gave him an enthusiastic welcome to his new home where seniors Beau and Mr. Parker introduced themselves. Thank you #GivingTuesday2025 donors!

Goliath is a 33yo former #SaltWellsCreek band #stallion with the magnificent, rare curly genetics that the BLM wants to wipe out. As he sheds his winter coat, birds hitch a ride on his strong back and take tufts of hair to line their nests and keep their babies warm. #wildhorses

Sovereign was too scared to load during evacuation from the #PalisadesFire. Teen volunteer Kalyna Fedorowycz, who’s known & loved him her whole life, rode & led him 14 miles out of a burning canyon for 4-5 hours. Her Dad drove behind. Bless this heroic horse girl @soulseedsforall

It ripped my heart out to see 30yo Marjorie Morning Star alone in a kill pen. Her dignity and helplessness in the face of such cruelty. Good food and a hoof trim already have her feeling better, along with kindness, soft voices, love and respect. You are home now, Marge.

Old Violet & Marjorie Morningstar survived years of neglect. After starvation, #horses often overeat to compensate. Knowing #winter is coming, they’ve been growing winter coats and piling on the pounds! We’ve put them on a healthy equine weight watcher diet until Christmas.

Two year olds Sunny & Birch were sold for $25 each as Sale Authority at a BLM adoption event along with 19 other young #wildhorses. They were driven straight to a kill pen & sold for a profit to make a horse trader rich off their suffering. They are now safe at #skydogsanctuary.

I could almost hear Shelby’s 25yo knees creak as he went down for his first #roll. The soft sand must have felt great on his back after the long ride home. A relaxing earth bath scrubs off the stench of the killpen with good clean dirt. 1st day of retirement after a life of work.

Cruiser was a #stallion who led a large band of #wildhorses, but only mated with one beloved #mare, Jorja. After the roundup, she delivered their last foal, Tupelo Honey, in BLM holding. This is the day we brought the family back together at #skydogsanctuary in #Oregon.

Mother Majesty’s ears are like reading Braille. They swivel to touch every sound and extract meaning, her other senses honed to a whole other level. Her little #foal Precious is a hero warrior, wise beyond her young age. She nuzzles into her mama, comforting and consoling.

Wild Boy’s spirit, pride, confidence and emotional intelligence are on display beneath a stormy Oregon sky. It’s impossible to fathom how he landed in a kill pen, fighting for survival, losing half his ear in the process, but he’s free today, living life on his own terms.

The BLM knows it would be political suicide to slaughter the 60,000 #wildhorses they have in holding, so they devised ways for middlemen to do their dirty work for them by funneling #wildhorses and #burros into the slaughter pipeline via the defunct AIP and now Sale Authority.

A new band of rescued #wildhorses. Noya, now called Nova, was brought out of the barn to meet other #mares: Wren, Lacey & Blossom. The introduction went beautifully and the new friends ran with delight. Lacey is protective of her #filly, Blossom, but felt no threat from Nova.
