Swaddling is so important because babies have startle reflexes - involuntary movement of their muscles. They want to feel secure the way they did inside of the womb. A proper swaddle recreates that feeling. Swaddling is like a hug. If you are somebody who knows you cannot function well on less than 4 hours of sleep per night or broken up sleep or you have/ are prone to depression and anxiety, I highly recommend saving money to put towards hiring postpartum overnight support.
