Every New Yorker deserves to move around our city freely and safely, regardless of how they get around. But too many people have been seriously injured or killed in crashes involving illegal e-bikes, e-motos, and e-scooters. That’s why the New York City Council is launching a comprehensive review of where existing laws can be stronger enforced, and what additional solutions are needed to keep New Yorkers safe.

A bagel shouldn't have to be so expensive — but rising insurance costs are making businesses and landlords raise their prices astronomically. That’s why I’m creating the Office of Insurance Affordability, to protect consumers and crack down on insurance increases that are burdening so many New Yorkers.

A week from today, the Council is holding a major hearing on artificial intelligence to examine the risks facing New Yorkers and review our first-in-the-nation legislation we can pass right here to protect the public. Today, I am announcing that OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta have all agreed to testify before us. As of today, only Elon Musk’s has not responded. As such, the Council has issued a subpoena compelling them to testify.

September 11 should bring New Yorkers together. It is not a day for politics, division, or hate. The Mayor of New York City should of course attend the commemoration, without question. Twenty-five years later, our focus must remain on those we lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the survivors who carry that day with them still.

Today, the Council released our response to the Mayor’s preliminary budget proposal. We've proposed closing a $6 billion budget shortfall responsibly, without any cuts to services or staff, while investing in programs that make life more affordable. To be clear, this is just the beginning. Council Member Linda Lee and I break down the Council’s response and the next steps:

The CityFHEPS rental assistance program is a lifeline for 65,000 of the most vulnerable New Yorkers — but it could and should be serving thousands more. Today we rallied at City Hall to demand that the Administration fund the program’s expansion in the city budget: New York families can’t wait.

As antisemitism and hate-fueled violence continue to rise, we must turn down the temperature and stand united against every act of hate targeting Jewish New Yorkers, AAPI New Yorkers, and every community. We will never allow hate to become normalized in our city.

New Yorkers, we have a budget deal! 🤝 Thank you to my New York City Council colleagues for their months of hard work, and to Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani for agreeing to a fiscally responsible budget that delivers for all New Yorkers at historic levels. The Council secured more capital and expense funding than EVER before — meaning unprecedented investments in you and your family.

Nearly one third of Americans alive today were born after 9/11, while millions more are too young to remember that day firsthand. The New York City Council secured $1 million to cover school field trips to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, ensuring that the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the heroic acts of that day are taught to the next generation.

New York City lost 5,000 businesses last year and created only 27,000 jobs— compared to roughly 190,000 jobs annually in the prior four years. That's not acceptable. A strong economy is how we fund affordable housing, child care, and everything New Yorkers need.
