Thanks friends for standing with me at every moment of persecution in the course of our public interest work. It means a lot. With the general public on our side, I know that the oppressors can only win the small battles but not the war. They can win cases, but not the cause. No weapon shaped against public interest can prosper. Ultimately, they lose more than they would have lost if they simply addressed the issues. The choice is theirs. Meanwhile, in the near future, I’m starting campaign “DON’T FEED THE GREEDY GIRAFFE”. As students apply for higher education in this period, let us actively advertise universities that care about quality and wellbeing of students and staff, and de-campaign those that simply believe in making money while using ‘might’ and impunity.

One of the lessons from the sudden unprecedented protests in Tanzania is that when oppressed people seem docile, don’t take then for granted. Tanzania has often appeared peaceful and the people have been largely quiet amidst rampant kidnaps, torture, killings, and political exclusion. Instead, government pressed harder, with the attitude of “what can they do?” I don’t think they now understand where people got the courage from. I belong to a WhatsApp group of Tanzanians that has always avoided critical political topics. All of a sudden, the group is seething fire! Leading angry people is like riding a leopard. It might look calm all the way, but at any moment you can turn into food or a carcass. It’s often a matter of time. It is never sustainable. Should we always learn the hard way?

I have kept these chicken indoors for a long time. Today, I opened the gate for them to go out, find what they want, and eat on their own. I had to literally chase them out. They would run around but avoided going out of the gate, until I gate up. I think in their ‘minds’, I love them a lot to be keeping them locked up. Many Ugandans are like this; so afraid of freedom, because they are so used to servitude (oppression) and the crumbs falling off the table of the oppressor. Anyone trying to lead them to the gate must labour so hard.

Today I drove around Industrial Area, and I accepted that I hadn’t seen anything yet! It is understandable why some people choose to keep quiet: Because, what more would you say about a government that allows this in its Capital City! Are we left with any sense of shame?

Today I visited this culturally innovative place called Ewaffe Cultural Village Ewaffe Cultural Village in Naggalama village. Visitors typically spend a full day there, where they are practically taken through cultural activities like barkcloth making, preparing local food (kuwaata, luwombo, kusaaniika…), making banana juice (omubissi), fetching water, brick making, fishing, growing and using herbs, ekyooto kya ssenga ne kojja … It is not only a wonderful innovation for cultural education, but also for cultural entrepreneurship where the community is involved and also benefits from the initiative. It is particularly inspiring that the proprietor is a young lady who set out with a B-Com degree, scanty resources and a dream only a year and a half ago. It is a place I would encourage parents who would want their children to learn about Baganda culture to visit. I was impressed! They deserve this shout out.

She’s dead! For them it’s just politics, for another family it is a loved one gone - just because she held a different political opinion! How do you expect others to feel your pain when you are directly killing their own! Can we ever have peace where we’ve inflicted such pointless permanent pain on others? Would you pretend to be angry when such innocent people you’ve harmed and hurt celebrate your own pain?

This is an extract from a footage that was screened at the ongoing Conference at Makerere commemorating 30 years of the 1995 Constitution. President Museveni gave the speech in 1992 upon receiving the draft of the Constitution from the drafting Commission headed by Benjamin Odoki. When you have seen what the government of the older Museveni is doing, it becomes quite difficult to listen to the speeches of the younger Museveni without getting disturbed and angry. Except if your conscience is sick or dead. #MakConferenceConstitution30

Today I was at Henrob Hospital. Somehow you still vainly hope that you will still bump into him pacing in the corridors, he will flash a smile, and he takes you around the hospital, showing you what they have added and the plans ahead. After waiting in vain, you find a discrete corner in the washrooms, cry intensely, clean up, wear a lie of a face, and walk away with your damaged heart.

I’m glad that students, staff, and alumni of the giraffe are generally happy that these issues are finally being discussed in the open. No one wants to move around with a Transcript or work record that needs a lot of explanation to be accepted. A genuinely good name for the institution is good for all associated with it, and vice versa. Urging you to clean up is also for your own good, even if you fight. Airtel also started by resisting and saying that what I was doing bordered on criminality. The difference with the giraffe is that for them they quickly realised that they were taking a wrong direction of arrogance. You can’t combine business with arrogance, except as a monopoly. Our next step was to call a boycott. But they quickly reached out, refunded the money that had sparked it, and committed to clean up. Indeed they cleaned up a lot, especially on mobile money theft. The trust in the band started coming back, and they had their peace ever since. As for the giraffe that trusts its long kicking legs, it thinks that every problem is solved by kicking. It didn’t refund (reallocate the money) despite many private engagements, it didn’t commit to address any specific issue of the many raised, instead, it resorted to kicking and displaying muscles. Left with no other option, and since the game rangers left it to be its own regulator, we shall also kick it intensely with thousands of feet, until it calms down. Even if it means kicking it for an entire year, we shall. We are civil when you are civil. When you stink, we stink back like a herd of skunks.

They staged in the middle of the road junction at Star (Kitebi), danced for about 45 minutes … then continued on their journey. When motorists complained, one of them said “tetwagala kumanya … eno gavumenti yaffe”. NB: There is a CCTV camera at the junction.
