Asoka looks so natural and effortless on screen, but trust me making it was anything but easy. Today, I’m sharing some BTS details about the film that you probably haven’t heard before… The film was researched for nearly two years before shooting even began. Costume designer Anu Vardhan and director Santosh Sivan worked extensively to create an authentic period look. The massive Kalinga war sequence was another level altogether. More than 6,000 extras and hundreds of elephants were involved, while around 4,000 lightweight fibreglass armour pieces were created for the warriors. And they didn’t rely entirely on sets. A large part of the film was shot at real locations across Pachmarhi, Maheshwar, Jabalpur, Bhubaneswar and Konark, giving Asoka that raw, natural visual feel. There was even a dedicated book documenting the making of the film The Making of Asoka, written by Mushtaq Shiekh. What looks effortless on screen was actually years of research, preparation and an enormous amount of work behind the camera.
