SSE - A Better World of Energy

We completed exploratory works on @sserenewables' Coire Glas pumped storage hydro scheme. The £100m programme involved the construction of a 1.2km tunnel into the hillside on the banks of Loch Lochy. ⛰️ Over 90,000 tonnes of rock and earth were excavated as part of the exploratory works! Important geological data was gathered from the rocks to inform the main design. Pumped hydro storage is critical to the UK Government's #CleanPowerMission. Coire Glas would be the first major pumped storage hydro scheme built in 40 years! With up to 30GWh of storage capacity, it could power three million homes for up to 24 hours. And it would nearly double Great Britain's total current electricity storage capacity. 🤯 Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed earlier this year a cap and floor investment framework would be introduced to enable the deployment of long-duration electricity storage projects.
