Fred Hoiberg is one of 5 COLLEGE HC’s that I could watch offensive sets from the entire day. Nebraska has played a ton of 5 OUT this season. They initiate a lot of their dead ball offense using a Weave or an Away Stagger. Their false motion and tag manipulation associated with these starters is INCREDIBLE. Nebraska - Delay Series Double away | UCLA | Pin Slip 👇🏼

‼️ Concepts that KILL IN HS ‼️ Switching 1-4 and 1-5 is very common. This action attempts to speed up the screeners’ defender and organically put him at the level of the ball, freeing up the slip. Like many teams, we call this GATOR. 👇🏼 Magrath Zeniths Iverson | Stack Out | Gator

Zeljko Obradovic is WIDELY regarded as one of, if not the greatest offensive mind ever. Greg Popovich is directly quoted as saying ‘I steal ALOT of plays from him.’ So many staples in today’s game were being ran by Obradovic 10 + years ago. He teaches very conceptually within a structured system. This is an awesome example of the endless counters involved with Zeljko ran teams in the half court. 👇🏼 Partizan Floppy | UCLA | Slice Flex | Baseline Stagger The BasketHead

‼️ Concepts that KILL IN HS ‼️ Iverson from dead ball actions > Iverson from live ball actions. Pace and tag removal are much easier from SLOB scenarios, in my opinion. 👇🏼 Magrath Zeniths SLOB Iverson Curl | Empty

Bill Self is the best tactician in college basketball. With how frequently teams use an elbow entry, especially into zoom, this play is BRILLIANT. This is Self’s super power- taking advantage of tendencies. Elbow | Smash | Slip

‼️ Concepts that KILL IN HS ‼️ Pistol is one of base continuities. A simple ‘exit’ from the weakside creates an empty curl on this 3 man action. 👇🏼 Magrath Zeniths Pistol | Exit

PLAYERS SHOULDN'T DREAD HALF TIME OR TIMEOUTS. We teach children that timeouts are safe, and we encourage adults to take breaks. The DATA says this should be the same for athletes. You CAN steal points during TOs, but not if they sound like this: 'The other team just wants it more.' 'Get your ass back on D.' 'Do you guys actually believe this team is better than you guys?' Break huddle. COMPOSED- get the players off of the emotional rollercoaster through your body language. ACTIONABLE- 1-3 actions or solutions that need to be addressed with a CLEAR HOW. PREPARED- game cards with solutions for different outcomes and scouts are critical. SIMPLE- 8-9 seconds is the average attention span. We are adding physical and mental stress to that in game. VALUE with fewer words is important. POSITIVE- this is hard. We've all been there. But research shows that athletes at every level respond to positivity exponentially more than negativity. JOY IS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE. Joe Mazulla has mastered this. 👇🏼 NBA

EMPTY BELOW THE NAIL Incredible ATO from Mazulla. He puts Tatum in the logo area, posted up. The high stagger removes all help below the nail. Can go to Tatum here for an isolation if they like the matchup. But in this case they use Jrue off of the stagger to allow Tatum to release off of the seal for a layup. Definitely an action to use at ALL LEVELS. 📝 Celtics ATO Middle Stagger | Logo Slip

‼️ MUST ADD FOR PRACTICE ‼️ Olympic style 3x3 is quickly becoming one of the best 'SSGs' for overall development. It's really fast paced, and every possession is played with a ton of purpose. Players play with maximum spacing, build endurance WITH THE BALL and, if done properly, SHOT QUALITY is the games' biggest emphasis. In the Olympics 👇🏼 The analytics behind the actions they deploy are much different than standard 5 on 5, as well. Shooting 25% from 3 is the equivalent of 50% from 2 so there is a HEAVY emphasis on making and defending the 3. This means there is a ton of switching and coverage solutions/counters to switching defenses with NO TAG AT THE HOOP. The game translates BEAUTIFULLY to 5 on 5. 3x3 rules are a simple constraint to make and defend the 3 ball at a much higher level using '3 man' actions. IMO, a must add to our 5 on 5 teams. Team USA: Get | Stagger Screen 👇

JB Bickerstaff said this on Media Day, before the season started: "Spacing is relative to what you're trying to get out of it." 5 out 4 out 3 out 2 In Diamond Horns 2 Guard Frint Single High Empty Side 1-4 Low Spread Are all examples of spacing templates. We can use different templates to run the EXACT SAME ACTIONS. Space is the most important conceptual skill that kids MUST learn and simultaneously the MOST important facet of NBA offense. SPACING DICTATES ADVANTAGE The Celtics run the same play with different templates. 👇🏼 Double Drag | Empty Double Drag | Spread

A big shift in college basketball: STAY OUT OF ROTATION AT ALL COSTS. Contested shooting % in the paint is a bigger advantage for the defense, than it is the offense when the alternative is a long closeout. In the event teams guard a ball screen with 3, instead of 2, the tag and rotation is short and extremely crisp in most cases. To counter this, offenses have gone into heavy 'EMPTY BELOW THE NAIL' looks to stretch the tag. UC Irvine uses a goalie in the key, 'whips' off ball screening actions and lock and trail all perimeter threats. They also stay home (packline gaps) beautifully on penetration. This allows them to rebound at a high level as well. 👇🏼

FLAT GHOST Simple and EXTREMELY effective. This is a STAPLE of Daigneault that I love. We call it ‘flat’. - screen is below the 3PT line with butt to the baseline - typically used in inverted or G2G actions - punishes a switch - great end of clock/end of game when switching is assumed - usually forces the D to put 2 on the ball, creating a 2 on 1 on the weakside Common mistakes: - setting the screen to high, pulling the pop out of range. Must be set ~ around the nail. - killing the dribble due to pressure Adding a 45 cut to this action really stretches the D and beats virtually any coverage. 🎥 Taylor Tucker

The 4 OFFENSES that make up ALL OFFENSES: Triangle, Princeton, DDM, Flex Understanding the spacing and triggers behind these systems opens up the Pandora's box of teaching the game conceptually. 👇🏼 Specific elements to study from each: TRIANGLE - Weakside 2 man game (pinch post) - Strongside cutting - Corner occupation and stretching the D PRINCETON - Playing through the big on the perimeter (point series) - Occupying the weakside defenders with replace/flare - 2 man off ball actions (split/chin) - Cutting DDM - Push/pull on penetration - Filling space - Short corner hunting seams Flex - Occupation of multiple helpside defenders - Screen the screener and finishing the action - Reading lock and trail vs switch out of off ball actions - BLOB/SLOB execution (STS) Rick Adelman was one of the first to modernize Princeton. Point Series into Spread spacing 👇🏼

🚨 Coaching Hack 🚨 Taking common actions and turning them into SLOB/BLOBs is an extremely effective way to disguise them. - During a scout, teams will typically split live ball offense and SLOB/BLOBs. - Very easy to start in a pseudo spacing template - Help will typically be in 1 pass away formation Conversely, taking your best SLOB/BLOBs and turning them into live ball actions accomplishes the EXACT same thing. This is a simple tactical strategy to steal 6 + points a game. The incredibly popular 'Iverson Curl' used as a SLOB. 👇🏼 🎥 Coach Rio
