Danny Hurley and his staff are amazing. But his predecessor, Jim Calhoun, is the most underrated college coach in history. When Calhoun took over at UConn, he didn't have the luxuries of Bobby Knight, Dean Smith and Coach K (recruiting to an elite academic program or a storied franchise). Yet he still managed to create a coaching legacy of a similar magnitude. "You can only be good at two or three things. You can't be good at everything." "When you walk into someone else's practice, you should be able to figure out what is important to the coach and the team in the first 15 minutes.” Attention to detail and emphasis, particularly on rebounding, were part of coach Calhoun's pillars. He is widely regarded as the best rebounding coach in history. He was also incredibly charismatic, hilarious and a recruiting powerhouse. This is a good question. 3 stops in a row, versus 3 randomized stops provides the team an opportunity to go on a run, on a micro level and to ‘shorten the game’ on a macro level. This gives more intrinsic value to each possession, and if done 7 times provides an EV of 90%. Pat Kelsey provides an explanation below. He got it from Chris Mack at Xavier, but every major program tracks this metric.

Michigan utilized a NEXT coverage, while switching every thing off ball, to be able to use Mara as a goalie all season long. Hurley used one of his staple ATO’s as a GOALIE/NEXT BEATER to counter Michigan in a big spot. Favorite set of the tourney 👇🏼 UConn Stack Out | Punch | Empty Flare

DUSTY MAY is the most underrated/unassuming coach in the country, imo. Love his story, and love the way his teams play. Michigan’s holds opponents to 30% from 3, while simulateously averaging 6.1 blocks per game (2nd in the country). It’s very rare that teams BOTH protect the rim AND guard the 3 ball at elite levels. The icing on the cake is they have the best or second best offense in the country, in virtually every metric. Guards look to blow up ball screens vs always relying on coverage. If they get screened, their peel switching is always crisp. It’s loud, it’s active; elite level film to study.👇🏼

Mark Few and Erik Spoelstra teaching a 2-3 zone into a M2M IF THE BALL IS ENTERED TO THE HIGH POST. Use this at ANY LEVEL. Definitely a wrinkle that will steal 5-6 possessions a game (and burn TO's from the opponent). - confuses the offense - take away the high/low - prevents an overload - slows down decision making * Another effective version of this is to start in M2M and zone up (2-3) all PNR's. Slappin' Glass did a segment on this recently that is very good. So fun to watch these guys cook. 👇🏼 Theo Lawson

Basketball is played WITH the basketball 5% of the time. One of my favorites quotes from Billy Donovan is: ‘The other 95% of the time most players spend trying to get the basketball’. Players also can’t conceptualize the amount of time they have the ball in their hands in a game. They think it’s exponentially more than it actually is. The ball is glorified, and rightfully so, but what are we doing with the other 95%? Do be ELITE REQUIRES impacting the game without the basketball. Your offense is defined by your TRANSITION philosophy, not by your HALF COURT strategy. When mapping your offensive structure for your team, break it down into this FLOW: Primary > Secondary> Half Court > EOC Most coaches spend the majority of their tactical work on half court offense. 🛑 Your primary and secondary transition systems create the best shot quality AND equate to the highest offensive ceiling (for most teams). Once your transitional flow is established, and your PPP is in the 1.00 range, then teach TRIGGERS into your Euro BS/ Princeton/5 out/DDM. Finish the clock, ideally, with the ball in your best players hands hunting the BEST AVAILABLE SHOT. “First 8 seconds is for you, next 8 seconds is for me, and the last 8 seconds is for our best shot maker.” - Chris Oliver Suns HC Jordan Ott on early offense/possession battle 👇🏼

Jon Scheyer and games based approach to development. Most coaches have THEORETICALLY attempted to do this for years. But coaches like Jordan Ott, Kenny Atkinson, Erik Spoelstra, Daigneault, etc. are paving the way at the professional level. In 2016 I stumbled upon the Chris Oliver podcast. It opened Pandoras Box for me. I think every coach needs to go through a few paradigms shifts throughout their career to dial in what they are, and what they want to be, as coach. @hoopherald

From an ANALYTICS perspective, shooting out of the post is actually very inefficient. BUT Passing out of the post is one of the most efficient actions in half court basketball. For LOWER LEVELS: Pace is more enjoyable for players, tougher to scout, increased possessions, shot quality increases.

A coach's most IMPORTANT JOBS: 1. Culture creation 2. Culture Maintenance Your culture is only as strong as what you tolerate. Before you can build VALUE you have to have TRUST. One of the most transcendent lessons that Steve Nash left on the game. This was the well known ‘touches’ study.
