Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe), who chairs the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, is exploring a road user charge—commonly called pay-per-mile—as a replacement for the state gas tax. The move comes as transportation revenue declines due to increasingly fuel-efficient vehicles and the growing prevalence of electric cars, which generate little to no gas tax revenue.
