Videos

While in Tuscaloosa this past Saturday for Stevey Joy’s graduation Mary Beth and I passed a Barnes and Noble and decided to go into “covert mission mode” 👀. We discovered a nice little stack of our “Still Here” books and may’ve left a few signed surprises behind near Midtown Village…report back if you find one!

70 years ago today 5 missionaries were killed in the jungles of Ecuador trying to reach a native tribe called the Waodani with the message of God’s love and grace. The incredibly powerful story was told in a book called Through Gates Of Splendor that deeply impacted me several years ago and inspired me to retell the story on my Live Out Loud tour 23 years ago…I even got to take Mincaye and Steve Saint on tour with me! It’s still one of those “did I really get to be a part of that” moments on this amazing Great Adventure God has taken me on, and thought I’d share a little of it with you on this anniversary! Here’s a short teaser, but I’d encourage you to take 30 min if ya can and watch this whole story on youtube. Watch here:

Today marks 34 years since the release of my song “I Will Be Here”. This song still means so much to Mary Beth & me, and I’m grateful for the countless stories of how much this song means to many of you as well. (Special thanks to Phil Naish, producer of the original version of this song, for joining me on this one!)

Mary Beth and I got into a little mischief at Barnes & Noble in San Antonio, TX… Found our book “out in the wild” and had to make our mark on it! The first to find it in our “premium placement” wins…(or ya might have to look back down low where we found it) 🤪 #StillHere (hint: look at 18030 HWY 281 N!)

Live in the light of the resurrection and renewal of this world, and of yourself, in a glorious, never-ending, joyful dance of grace. Tim Keller Today, while so many grieve the loss of this incredibly brilliant teacher and faithful shepherd and pastor, please join me in praying for comfort and peace for his wife and family… as Tim is now dancing joyfully with the Jesus he so deeply loved and helped me come to know and love so much better while on this side of the veil. Thank you dear brother…until we dance in the pure light of His grace together! Timothy Keller (1950-2023)

After posting the picture of my family and me with the late Robert Duvall yesterday, many of you mentioned the song “I Will Not Go Quietly” that I wrote & recorded for his great movie “The Apostle”…I just had to grab one of my blues guitars and play a little of this one for “Sonny”! “I always call you Jesus, you always call me Sonny!”

I’m gonna have to confess that I’ve never paid much attention to Earth Day before, but when I saw it today I had the thought, “you know, I am very thankful for this earth that God made, even with all the brokenness that’s here on it. I know we’re meant to be “good caretakers and stewards of it” while we’re here. So, it’s good to have a day to remember that...and also to remember the incredible truth that Psalm 24:1 reminds us of: “The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all it’s people belong to Him!” So yeah, Happy Earth Day!

So much stirring in so many of our hearts right now, it seemed like a perfect time to remind myself & anyone else who needs to hear it… “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalms 46:10 NLT

This will be my 42 Valentine’s Day with the love of my life, Mary Beth Chapman (our 41st as a married couple…we were dating on our 1st one together.) What a journey it has been…way higher mountains and much deeper valleys than we could’ve ever imagined…and God has been completely faithful every step of the way! We decided to share some of the lessons we’ve learned (& are still learning) on our “long way home” in a book that comes out in a few weeks called “Still Here.” We’re hoping & praying it will encourage others on their own journey! “Still Here” is available to pre-order now on Amazon:

I was listening to a sermon recently from one of my favorite teachers, Tim Keller, who sadly passed from this earth earlier this year. He was talking about the power and meaning of the words “Peace On Earth”. I was deeply encouraged and challenged to consider the significance of those words, particularly what they meant when announced by the angels 2000 years ago, and what they mean to us in 2023. As I was reflecting on all of that in light of what’s happening in my life personally with family and friends as well as in the world as a whole, I started thinking about a song I wrote a few years ago with my friend Tom Douglas called “A Desperate Benediction (Peace on Earth)” and suddenly found myself rewriting some of the words of this song, specifically related to right now...Christmas 2023. I’m not even sure as a songwriter what the rules are on this kind of a thing, but I felt strongly that I wanted to share it with you…So here you go. Peace on Earth, Christmas 2023.

I heard a great sermon today and at the end of the message an old hymn was sung that I wasn’t familiar with…but I loved what it said! Apparently it was written by a poet/hymnwriter in the late 1700s named Joseph Swain. I picked up my guitar and started singing my own version…and thought I’d share it with you as a reminder for us to “Look to Jesus”! Blessings on your day, scc

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! So this has been a strange one…After days of prepping to “throw down” one of the great Chapman Family Thanksgiving Feasts Mary Beth is famous for, we both got very sick during the night (I’ll withhold details, but not fun whatsoever!) So with a beautifully set table, a fridge full of tasty goodness, we had to call all the kids and Grandkids this morning to announce…”Thanksgiving has been cancelled!” Ok, not Thanksgiving actually, but our plans to celebrate had to be cancelled, and (a very very sad) Mary Beth & I have spent the better part of the day in bed trying to rest & recover. So while I’m laying there feeling very not Thanksgiving-y, I start to ponder this day through all the different lenses that people may be seeing it through, (dear friends who are facing their first Thanksgiving with an empty chair at the table where their son should’ve been to a family celebrating their first Thanksgiving with their new little boy and all the fun and joy that brings…all the sad, happy, broken stories that we are living in that don’t necessarily match the tv version of a Happy Thanksgiving. Well you know what happens when I ponder…songs happen! So I “rallied” and sat down today to share this one with you. Now, this is where I’m very tempted to insert many disclaimers about how “unfinished” the song is, and how “not great of a performance” it is, or how tomorrow when I’m feeling more like myself I may really second guess this decision, but with all of that as it is, I decided to share this with you all anyway…in hopes that whatever “condition” you find yourself in this Happy Thanksgiving Day, you will find encouragement, hope, and much to be thankful for along with me. Thanks for letting me share!

2 years ago today, after much prayer and hope for healing this side of heaven our family lost a great man, Barry Morris, after a brief and fierce battle with cancer. Only a week earlier we had said goodbye to another dear friend and great man, Brian Green, who we were certain was going to recover from his illness and have many more years here with us. I wrote this song as I prayed, wrestled with and tried to listen to what those losses might teach me, and wanted to share a little acoustic version, as I’m still trying to remember and learn to “Love Now”.

So in honor of our 39th anniversary (and at the risk of repeating myself) I thought I’d share yet another clip of one of my fave “live versions” of I Will Be Here that I did a few years ago with an orchestra. Hope you enjoy another version of this very special song...inspired by my bride of 39 years!

So this is a little different for me…I don’t often cover other people’s songs to share on my “socials”. But every so often a song comes along that moves me, inspires me and reminds me again of the power of music and why I love it so much…and I find myself walking around singing it. This powerful new song from Mumford and Sons new album which is amazing by the way) hit me hard…I “felt” it in a deep way…so I grabbed a guitar, fired up the iphone camera and decided to share an SCC version with you. (And Marcus, if this version happens somehow to find it’s way to you, I sure hope you and the fellas feel like it does the song justice : ) … thank you for sharing it.) Mumford & Sons
