One of the best things about the work I do is being exposed to relational interpretations of so many teams all over the world. This is a clip from Thomas Pedersen's Brattvåg IL playing in the Norwegian 3rd Tier. Extreme proximity to generate connections around the ball carrier.

So often it is ShadowPlay that unlocks defences. Its amazing it isn't already a more prominent coaching principle and analytic metric. Interestingly, ShadowPlay directly opposes the almost universal UP-BACK-THROUGH.

Anyone who has spent any time watching Lee Carsley's u21s will know that English players can play ball and win. As always, the way a team plays is defined by their shared intentions, which, to a large degree, are shaped by the coach's methods.

Scaloni's Argentina simply aren't playing with the same fluency as they have. This clip is from 2021, but all players are in the WC 26 squad. Messi needs an associative partner like Lo Celso or Paz to sync with. Too many of his close combinations with Macallister break down.

Cesc's Como feels like a looser interpretation of RDZs approach. Use pressure as the trigger to progress, but provoke on a more diagonal axis. Start from low FBs instead of CBs. Attract in-to-out pressure, combine out-to-in against it. This way doesnt need such rigid positioning.

For modern Positionist coaches, the current shift to set-piece emphasis is inevitable. Increased physicality means defences can 'constrain spaces' (go man-to-man) better and for longer. Positionism requires these spaces to afford attacking combinations. So, we have a problem. 🧵

What happens when you analyse a tactical system from a different perspective? Wirtz turns into a left back? Woltemade's 9 gets flipped to become a 6? Numbers lose their meanings. It's all possible in the context of Julian Nagelsmann's extreme diagonality 🇩🇪↗️↘️↙️↖️

You always know beautiful football when you see it. You just have to know where to look 🇨🇴☕️ Interestingly, Colombia scored this masterpiece without having runners breach the opponent's backline.

Look how the 6s/MFs are always timing their movements to provide immediate inside support to FBs (or any player in a wide area) as soon as they receive it. And the wide receivers are always looking to play inside to find those connections. Aligned perceptions, shared intentions.

I repeat: THIS IS THE NORWEGIAN 3rd TIER. Fantastically well-organised attacking football full of intuition, spontaneity and expression within a collective tactical framework. Imagine the best players in the world coached in this way. Brattvåg IL 👏🇳🇴

It wasn't obvious then, but Ricardo La Volpe's 2006 Mexico was perhaps the team that most foreshadowed how football would develop over the next 18years. Huge influence on Guardiola. CMs#6#8 dropping into the backline would become known as 'salida lavolpiana' (La Volpe's Exit).

Fabregas intuitively understands where football is heading - more movement in attack. He frames this movement as 'rotational' rather than 'associative', so that's interesting to keep track of. No surprise he praises Spalletti's Juve in relation to this topic - a man of taste.

In terms of concrete tactical concepts, diagonal combinations are about as close to the mystical "Manchester Utd way" as you can get.

Kim Hellberg's assistant coach David Selini speaking about developing these relationships through training. The idea is to create a common language of play, intelligible between their players, but incoherent to the opposition. An encoded, deceptive communication system. (Nov'22)
