There is something Mamata Banerjee should remember. There was a time when she publicly humiliated Mahua Moitra. Today, in Mamata’s hour of need, Mahua stands firmly by her side. Perhaps the time has come for Mamata Banerjee to reflect on some of those decisions and, if she believes they were wrong, say so publicly. It would not diminish her stature. It would strengthen it.

Vikasit - How? I was watching an old television debate on the 1992 Budget today. What struck me was not the politics. It was the way people spoke. No shouting matches. No personal attacks. No anchors trying to create drama every second. People disagreed, sometimes sharply, but there was still respect in the conversation. They listened. They spoke with facts. There was depth, patience and a certain culture in public debate. And honestly, it made me wonder. As a nation, are we truly moving forward? Or are we slowly losing something important along the way? India in 1992 was far less wealthy and far less advanced technologically. But in many ways, public discourse seemed more intelligent and more civilised. Knowledge mattered. Serious conversations mattered. Today we have faster internet, bigger studios, sharper graphics, louder nationalism and endless opinions every minute. But are we becoming wiser? Are we becoming kinder? More thoughtful? More cultured? A civilisation does not decline only when its economy collapses. It declines when its conversations collapse. When reason becomes weakness. When shouting replaces thinking. When performance replaces substance. Watching that old debate felt less like looking at the past and more like holding up a mirror to the present. What exactly have we changed into?
