After the change of government in Delhi and the initial excitement about the news, an impression was created in a section of the media that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was incompetent, a poseur and a dunderhead. Looks like it was a sinister campaign against her to discredit the new dispensation, perhaps by the AAP that lost the election. Besides cleaning the Yamuna part by part, the attached video demonstrates but a sample of what the BJP administration has been doing in the city without creating any buzz in the news cycle.

During an inspection of the Salt Lake AE Market this morning, Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee — the BJP MLA for Constituency 116, Bidhannagar — ran into a vendor operating a business, encroaching upon the roadside pavement. The man, who claims to hold a franchise for Sufal Bangla (a state government initiative), has been conducting business in this manner for the past several years. Furthermore, he hails from Basanti and possesses no valid photo identification whatsoever. The instance serves as a stark illustration of how, throughout Bidhannagar, small-time traders continue to illegally occupy pavements and conduct business day after day, simply by paying a monthly kickback to local political strongmen. The story is on the lines of that from the Canning railway station ( where an automobile mechanic claimed he had been paying somebody ₹50,000 per annum for years, and yet the police threw him out of the premises the day before yesterday.

This school teacher in Krishnanagar, Nadia, West Bengal, is accused of siphoning off relief material in collusion with the TMC minister and local leaders. Whatever the charges against her, we’ve had enough of “jônorosh” (public anger). Bengal Police must now seize back control of the state’s law and order situation. Vigilantism and mob justice cannot go on unchecked indefinitely.

She never felt for us, though. I feel sorry for her because she lost Bhavanipur at such an old age, which is very sad. People were no longer able to bear with the Trinamool Congress. The results speak for themselves; I have nothing to add. People have blessed the BJP, raising both hands. We have been reduced to 80-82 (seats). People’s trust in us certainly took a beating. On Sunday afternoon, in a drive at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus in Malda, names, logos and stickers mimicking those of government buses were removed from several private buses. Many private buses were operating with colour schemes (blue and white) and names resembling those of the state transport corporation. The use of such colours and names was causing confusion among passengers, particularly women. Following an order from the state government, free travel for women on government buses was introduced on 1 June. However, due to the visual similarity between government and private buses, many female passengers were inadvertently boarding private buses and subsequently getting hassled. Some private buses were displaying names like NBTS, MBTSG, and MMT to mimic the name of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC). Additionally, the vehicles were painted blue and white, just like government buses. On Sunday afternoon, Anupam Chakraborty, the regional transport officer (RTO) of the district, arrived at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus with transport department staff. There, misleading logos and stickers were removed from several private buses. Furthermore, markings and text imitating the state transport corporation’s branding were painted over with black ink. Passengers expressed relief at this move by the transport department. They believe that a clear distinction between government and private buses will prevent future confusion and significantly reduce harassment, especially for female passengers. Maloy Karmakar, in charge of the Malda Depot of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation, stated that the blue-and-white colour scheme has been used on NBSTC buses for many years, and the colour of private buses is not within their jurisdiction. However, he noted that female passengers often ask if a bus is a government one; NBSTC buses are painted blue and white as per government regulations, while the RTO office would be the authority to speak on bus colour specifications.

Yesterday, a woman shopkeeper, on reaching her shop in Dum Dum, West Bengal, noticed that it was occupied. When she asked what was going on, the encroacher first said she could operate out of half the premises. When she disagreed, she was assaulted and molested. The victim approached the local BJP office and complained, saying that the miscreant wore saffron. It turned out he had no links with the party. MLA Arijit Bakshi (Dum Dum, AC-114), also a lawyer by profession, helped free her shop and assured the people that such criminal activities would not be tolerated, no matter who the suspect was.

Tapan Biswas, a Trinamool activist and close associate of Malabika Baidya, the Trinamool Councillor for Ward No. 127, has been arrested. Seeing him cornered, residents shouted, “Chor! Chor! (Thief! Thief!)”. Tapan Biswas is accused of extortion, threatening people and land encroachment.

Voting hasn’t been 100% free and fair this time either, Election Commission of India & CEO West Bengal! This voter from Malda says no Hindu from his village was allowed to vote. He alleges that Trinamool Congress’s thugs stopped them and asked whether they would vote for Mamata Banerjee’s party. He refused and returned home without voting. I guess a few Hindus might have lied to get in, but that is no consolation. It does not matter that 400 Hindu votes wouldn’t alter the outcome when Muslim votes in the booth number thousands. What matters is the unfairness of the exercise and the assault on democracy.

This video will give you an indication of the extent to which governance needs to be fixed in West Bengal. The woman in the video is a PWD employee, and her husband is a local Trinamool Congress leader. Her job is to open the water pump office on time, ensure water supply to the houses in the locality, and maintain the hardware. Instead, she would keep the pump house locked and enjoy a siesta at home every day.

The Ganguly family of Shyamnagar is finally relieved. For several years, Somnath Shyam, the outgoing TMC MLA of Jagaddal, obstructed the plot of land belonging to this family on Bharat Chandra Roy Road in Shyamnagar by fencing it off and displaying outside the cordoned off area the ‘Biswa Bangla’ logo. The obstruction was allegedly imposed because the family refused to sell the land at the throwaway price offered by the MLA. Yesterday, following the BJP’s victory in the West Bengal assembly election, party workers dismantled the barrier. Using bulldozers, they systematically demolished and razed to the ground all the walls that had been erected to block the property.

The BJP candidate in Barrackpore, Koustav Bagchi, runs into an angry voter upset with the TMC and CPM, who failed to keep their promises. She vents her frustration before anyone who approaches her to seek her family’s votes. She is angry also because of the exclusion of her married daughter’s name from the electoral roll. Look how coolly Bagchi handles the situation.
