We take HADR ops for granted but we must know saving lives is an equal act of valour as taking the lives of enemies. Imagine a gigantic aircraft (C-130J) landing on a damaged airstrip, in pitch darkness, without the support of ATC, in war torned Sudan , under the threat of enemy fire, to save 118 Indian citizens. The gravity of the situation was serious, aircraft were shot, embassies were attacked, civilians were being killed & there was no law & order in the country. The pilots flew in grave dangers & could have returned, but they did not! Garud executed a thrilling operation & the crew performed at its finest. It is for operation Wadi Sedina Dr. S. Just a regular day at the Garud Regimental Training Centre… The trainees carrying wooden logs are officer cadets who are made to run with heavy logs resembling rocket launchers along with their pithoos, unlike the airmen who run only with pithoos. One Ustaad shared with me “We ask them to run with these wooden logs saying what if one day they have to run with real rocket launchers? 😁” The officer trainees undergo extra ragda and are subjected to gruelling training before they are selected to become Garuds. It is on their shoulders that the safety & survival of their flight will depend. Hence, their training level is tougher. This was shot last year, and by the time my book is published, I assume only a handful of them would have joined the elite ranks of the Garud.
