I had raised this issue three weeks ago and now see how people are suffering because of the poor performance of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, which unfortunately has become almost dysfunctional! The people at the helm are not taking their responsibilities seriously despite being paid for this work! Unless people are held accountable and action is initiated against those not doing their job properly, nothing will change! Just two days left for Eid and I drove through Ghanta Ghar and Residency Road an hour ago—there was literally NO traffic on the roads and shopkeepers were sitting idle, waiting for customers to arrive! Two days before Eid, Lal Chowk, Residency Road and the adjoining markets used to be packed and full of life! But! Today it’s just sad to see it so quiet! Please take a moment to look around—your neighbourhood .. your extended family! If you are in a position to help, do support those in need! May Allah’s mercy be upon us all ..

There’s a common perception in Kashmir that medicines sold in the market are not genuine — which is not true! The idea of “nakli dawai” is mostly a myth! A medcine can be substandard but not NAKLI ! However! Concerns do exist about substandard medicines allegedly being sold by certain private nursing homes and clinics! These are often procured through contract manufacturing units in places like Baddi and parts of Gujarat! And the biggest problem is that such medicines are often available only at the drug counters of those specific clinics or nursing homes, not in the open market or reputed pharmacies! This makes it very difficult for patients who need to continue the same medication, as they are forced to travel all the way back to that particular place just to buy it again! Medicines are generally manufactured and sold under two categories: ethical and generic! Ethical drugs are usually prescribed by doctors and follow regulated pricing structures, usually allowing a margin of 15–20%.! Generic medicines on the other hand are sold directly and can have profit margins as high as 80%.! This is where the confusion begins! Consumers assume that all medicines carry such high margins — which is not the case! People often ask how some chemists offer huge discounts! The answer lies in the model! Many of these outlets are charity driven or not for profit setups where profit isn’t a concern! Some private chemists also offer steep discounts without properly calculating their overheads — but eventually most of them are unable to sustain and end up shutting shop! Another false notion often heard in Kashmir is that Mr. X sells genuine medicines while Mr. Y doesn’t! How is that even possible when the company is the same, the C&F agent is the same and the distributor delivering to both is also the same .. Are we saying the distributor is sending genuine stock to one and fake to the other .. That’s simply not possible—unless the stock is being procured from some other place or source! For consumers there’s a simple way to verify the authenticity of a medicine! Standard medicines, especially those manufactured by multinational companies carry barcodes and embossed codes on the strips! You can scan the code or send it directly to the manufacturer to authenticate its genuineness — and receive confirmation within seconds! Moreover! J&K has a state of the art drug testing laboratory in Kathua — one of its kind in North India — where the Drug Control Department regularly sends samples for testing and issues detailed reports on their quality and authenticity! Let’s not generalise or spread panic! The Drug Enforcement Agency in J&K is among one of the strongest in the country, with a robust regulatory framework! Sampling and analysis are conducted regularly! While isolated cases may occur, the medicines sold in Kashmir are largely genuine and safe!

This is not the first case and sadly, it won’t be the last! About six years ago I rescued an old man from Rambagh, Srinagar, who had been abandoned by his only son living comfortably in Padshahi Bagh! That son had thrown his father out of the house, forcing the poor man to live under the open sky! Alhamdulillah! The man is still alive and doing well to this day! Back then when I said we needed old age homes for the elderly everyone said I was exaggerating and being garrulous! But look at the reality today — old age homes are no longer a choice, they have become a necessity and most of them are overcrowded! It’s not only about children living abroad and forgetting their parents! Here in Kashmir itself, there are countless examples of parents being abandoned right after their properties are transferred to their children’s names! I personally know many who live luxurious lives in the US and don’t even bother to call their parents! But! I also know those who travel every few months just to care for their ailing parents! So it all depends! In fact I have witnessed some parents never appreciate their children, despite doing their best and making their lives comfortable! Years ago when a drain was being built in Natipora, workers went inside to fetch water but were overwhelmed by a foul stench! They later discovered a woman who had died in her home a week earlier, all alone! On the other hand I know a renowned urologist who left his thriving career in the US and returned to Kashmir just to serve his aging parents, even while his own family stayed back there! The truth is it all comes down to upbringing and values! We have shifted our focus almost entirely to worldly education, which is no doubt important but in the process we have neglected deeni taleem .. the spiritual and moral foundation that instills khuda ka khouf in children, ensuring they never abandon their parents! Both types of education must go hand in hand! The day we give preference to Noorani Qaaidah over English reader, the problem is sorted! And remember this law of nature .. as you treat your parents, so will your children treat you! That day is not far when last rites will be outsourced to event planners, with Bihari workers hired to bury our dead parents while sons and daughters from US simply transfer money instead of attending in person! Even today many elderly live at the mercy of Chotu from Bengal, brought in from manpower agencies! This is where we stand! It’s time to pause, reflect and return to our values, before it’s too late! But sadly it’s already too late! Greed has taken over our emotional attachment and values! We are living through without a conscience and we can only give moral lectures, it includes me!
