🚨 BREAKING - Sri Lankan police remove Thileepan statue from Nallur memorial Sri Lankan police officers have forcibly removed a statue of Lt. Col. Thileepan from his memorial in Nallur, Jaffna, just a day after the Tamil nation commemorated 39 years since his fast unto death. Over 20 Sri Lankan police officers including Jaffna's Officer in Charge (OIC) arrived in the early hours of the morning and swiftly removed the statue. The removal comes a day after hundreds of Tamils gathered at the memorial to remember Thileepan, who fasted unto death in a protest appealing to the Indian government to deliver on the pledges it made to the Tamil people.

🛕 Tamil worshippers held back as Sinhala Buddhist monk dismisses their faith as 'false beliefs' Sri Lankan police made Saivite devotees wait at the foot of Vedukkunaari Hill in Vavuniya while a monk-led Sinhala Buddhist group chanted pirith at the summit. On the way in, police stopped devotees at three checkpoints and recorded their names, including that of MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam. Kalgamuwa Santhabohi claimed Tamils had been worshipping there on the basis of "false beliefs". He also said permission had been obtained to install a restored Buddha statue at the site.

🕯 Bronze statue of Thileepan unveiled as commemorations begin in Jaffna A newly installed bronze statue of Lt Col Thileepan stood at the centre of commemorations in Nallur on Tuesday, garlanded as Tamils marked 39 years since he began the fast that would end in his death. The ceremony began at 9.45am, the hour he began his fast without food or water at the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple in 1987. Veteran fighter Basheer Kakka lit the common flame. After 12 days he died, at 10.48am on 26 September 1987, with none of his five demands met. The statue stands at a site the Sri Lankan army has destroyed three times.

🚨 Bound and beheaded: Chemmani excavation passes 100 days and 500 remains A headless human skeleton with both hands bound and held against its chest has been uncovered at the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna. The neck had been severed and the skull was absent, though the body appeared to have been laid in a relatively normal resting position. Excavations have now passed 101 days, with 515 sets of human remains identified and 506 fully exhumed. Around 150 items have been recovered as evidence, including a child's milk-feeding bottle, a school bag, bangles, footwear and a talisman. Sri Lanka's Criminal Investigation Department told the court last month that it had not yet been established whether a crime had taken place at the site.

🚨 Footage shows military selling produce from occupied Tamil land, contradicting parliament claim Footage seen by the Tamil Guardian appears to show Sri Lankan military personnel selling large quantities of vegetables grown on military-occupied Tamil land to a Keells collection centre in Jaffna, directly contradicting claims the deputy defence minister made in parliament only last week. The video shows soldiers transporting and handing over agricultural produce at the collection centre in Urumpirai, along the Palaly Road. It surfaced just days after the deputy defence minister, Aruna Jayasekara, rejected allegations that the military commercially exploits the land it occupies in the North-East, telling parliament that cultivation within military camps was carried out solely for the army's own consumption.

🚨 STF officers filmed assaulting woman during Kilinochchi arrests of children and elderly Footage from in Umaiyalpuram, Kilinochchi, shows officers of Sri Lanka's Special Task Force (STF) assaulting a woman during a confrontation with residents, after which fourteen Tamil civilians, among them young children, schoolgirls and elderly residents, were remanded, in an operation that began over alleged illegal sand mining. The STF had entered the Umaiyalpuram area, residents say, ostensibly to halt alleged illegal sand mining. Tensions escalated when officers attempted to arrest a man found with a tractor in a forest area, prompting a confrontation as his relatives and neighbours gathered at the scene. Additional STF personnel were then deployed, and force was used against the civilians present, with footage of the incident showing officers assaulting a woman. Fourteen people were arrested and produced before the Kilinochchi court, which ordered them remanded pending further proceedings. Those held, according to local sources, include two young children, their parents, two schoolgirls and elderly residents.

🚨 Extremists attempt to storm May 18 remembrance in Colombo, burn Prabhakaran portrait A group of Sinhala Buddhist extremists attempted to disrupt a peaceful remembrance event to mourn "war victims" held at Wellawatte beach in Colombo on Monday, with participants subjected to racist and misogynistic abuse before Sri Lankan police intervened to prevent violence. The remembrance event, organised to honour civilians killed during the final phase of the armed conflict, saw participants light memorial flames and pay floral tributes in memory of those who were massacred during the war’s closing stages. Witnesses stated that a group led by a Sinhala Buddhist monk arrived from the nearby main road area and attempted to charge towards the gathering by crossing the railway tracks adjacent to the beach venue. The group went on to shout racist slogans and directe obscene verbal abuse at Tamil attendees, including women and children present at the event. Several witnesses further stated that members of the group accused mourners of “supporting terrorism” and claimed that those killed in Mullivaikkal were “all terrorists”. Witnesses also stated that a Christian father attending the event, was nearly assaulted during the commotion before several attendees intervened to protect him. The extremist group later burned a photograph of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran while continuing to accuse participants of commemorating "terrorism". 📹 via Lankasri News

🚨 387 and rising - Chemmani becomes the island's largest mass grave The Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna has become the largest ever uncovered on the island, with the number of skeletal remains identified at the site rising to 387, surpassing the toll recorded at any other mass grave that has been uncovered so far. The site passed that grim threshold on Wednesday, the 27th day of the third phase of excavations, when the count overtook the 376 human remains recovered from the Mannar Sathosa mass grave, until now the largest recorded on the island. By Thursday, the 28th day, the figure at Chemmani had risen to 387 sets of skeletal remains identified, of which 367 have been exhumed.

🚨 'Why do you have to kill Prabhakaran's son?' Hakeem demands war crimes investigation Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem told parliament on Wednesday that the killing of Balachandran Prabhakaran, the 12-year-old son of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, must be investigated as a war crime. Speaking during a parliamentary debate, Hakeem referred to renewed attention on the child's murder. He recalled the photographs that emerged after the war showing Balachandran alive and being given a snack in Sri Lankan military custody, before later images showed his body with gunshot wounds to the chest. Drawing comparisons with the treatment of the families of other militant leaders, he noted that the children and family of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) founder Rohana Wijeweera had been protected after Wijeweera was killed, and that the daughter of Easter Sunday attacks mastermind Zahran Hashim had survived. "Wijeweera's family was saved. Zahran's daughter was saved. Why do you have to kill Prabhakaran's son?" he asked. Hakeem stressed that he was not asserting that the killing had taken place, but argued that if it had, it demanded a proper inquiry. "If it is true that such a war crime occurred, and if Prabhakaran's son was killed, then the matter must be investigated. It must be treated as a war crime," he said.
