I read that there was a “No Kings Day” protest in Brenham, Texas, the small town my Mom and her boyfriend live in that sits between Houston and Austin — population ~20,000. I jokingly asked her to swing by it to see what type of turnout there would be and to report back. Because Robin Popielarz’s a good mom of a journalist, here’s what she found:

I hosted Washington Journal this morning and had a three-time Donald Trump voter who called in to share this: "It's hard for me to say this, but I think, if i can open up about it in public that it might help others, I wanted to believe Trump was the real deal for a long time, even though I had doubts because I knew enough about his business history to think otherwise. But now I regret my support for him and I should've known better." "He's the worst president we've ever had and he's the most corrupt president we've ever had. I know it's hard, it took me a while to be able to say that. Very difficult when you commit yourself to believing in somebody."

An exchange I had with a Donald Trump supporter at the former president's rally in Florida this week: Me: “As you’re saying you’re concerned about Joe Biden’s age and abilities, Trump is only 3.5 years younger. Do you have any concerns about Trump’s age?” Doris Mitchell: “John F. Kennedy, he’s still alive. John F. Kennedy, he’s over 100 years old…our vice president is John F. Kennedy Jr.”

The pardoning of Thanksgiving turkeys is a White House tradition. What’s untraditional is the event being stuffed with a heaping serving of politics. Among the things President Trump said during today’s event: • Claimed President Biden’s turkey pardons, and other pardons, were invalid • Said he would’ve called the turkeys Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi if he didn’t have to pardon them • Called the mayor of Chicago “incompetent” and the governor of Illinois “a big fat slob” as he insisted the people of Chicago want troops deployed into their city • Falsely claimed there hasn’t been a murder in Washington, DC in months • Joked about sending turkeys to El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center • Commented on the negotiations to end Russia’s war on Ukraine

As Trump and his campaign criticize Iowa pollster J. Ann Selzer, I dug through my archives and found Trump saying this last December: "...they have a great pollster, actually, a very powerful pollster, very good, talented pollster. Of course, if my numbers were bad, I wouldn't be saying that. I'd say, ‘They have a terrible pollster. She doesn’t know' — she, it’s a she — 'she doesn't know what she's doing.’ But no, she's very good."

I spoke 1-on-1 today with Education Secretary Linda McMahon. Yesterday, she announced new steps to move six of the department’s offices to other federal agencies, without the approval of Congress, to demonstrate a “proof of concept” that the Education Department can be closed without disrupting key services – a goal of President Trump’s. Critics call it illegal, inefficient, and worry that the DOE being dismantled could lead to inequity in schools across the country. “Certainly, the states themselves are responsible for the education within that state. Some states are going to do a better job than others,” Secretary Linda McMahon acknowledged to me. Watch our full interview:

I asked White House Karoline Leavitt what steps the Trump Administration is taking to address the conflict of interest that is Elon Musk running Department of Government Efficiency as a "special government employee" while also owning companies that have billions of dollars in federal contracts: "The president was already asked and answered this question this week. And he said if Elon Musk comes across a conflict of interest with the contracts and the funding that DOGE is overseeing, that Elon will excuse himself from those contracts," she told me. (Appreciate Karoline Leavitt allowing us in the back row of the briefing room to get some Qs in)
